Disturbing moments

edited October 2012 in Games
What happens when you successfully qualify at skeet shoot on Hyper Sports is downright unsettling. The not-quite-human face of the previously unseen shooter turns to wink menacingly at the player, while what can only be described as the Apocalypse apparently begins just off-camera (if the roar of corruption and horror of a sound effect is any indicator).

    You must be easily "disturbed".

Don't play Friday the 13th! Although that's disturbing for all the wrong reasons. ;)

when you die in Beyond The Ice Palace and your flashing soul rises out your body, that was a bit 'wooaahh'

there was a big thread of scariest speccy games a couple of years back

Lop Ears when you get ran over....silly rabbit :D

Also Lop Ears how a pitbull drains your energy, but a tiny red Squirrel makes you keel over and die instantly? Hmmmmmm?

What was considered sick back in the day was Firebird's 'Mad Nurse' you have to stop babies falling down lift shafts to their deaths or sticking their fingers in electric sockets, it was a bit disturbing at the time.
I wouldn't consider Hyper Sports disturbing, its a good game.

If the shooter turned round and didn't have a face, I would find his lack of face disturbing.

Most unsettling moment in any Speccy game for me is when the 3 minute warning goes off in Ground Zero when you're still looking for shelter.

Yup it ruins what otherwise could've been quite a good game, and so does the fact that you have to do the forwards jump to go up a slope instead of the game just letting you keep walking.

Bulbous eyes watching you on the forest road.

The amount of clothes Sam Fox wears, scarves, gloves, hat...wtf.

    R tape loading error messages

Most disturbing: Spectrum software (games, demos) where naked ladies have bushes.

Most ackward: When you press down in "Myth", looks like he's taking a dump.

Put headphones on and listen to that sound effect though. It doesnt sound like a crowd cheering, it sounds like a million souls perishing in nuclear armageddon. And in that context, the wink is creepy.

there were certain games i think published by US Gold which had a horrible sounding screeching loading scheme (i used to call them "screechload" games). I used to be always freaked out when the loading error message started flashing at the bottom and it made the noise as if you've left a joystick on the keyboard.

i always found that games with this loading scheme were also the most prone to failing

Don't know the technical term of the loading scheme but i know ghouls and ghosts used it.

That reminds me of when Charlie Brooker was describing how loud the presenters and audience were on reality shows like Popstars: The Rivals.

Like concorde crashing into a saucepan factory.

Like Jupiter exploding above a foghorn convention.

Considering the sonic limitations of the speecy (and pre 128K days) it would have been impossible to recreate a convincing applause noise on the spec.
I think theres a similar explosion noise in Ping Pong when you or your opponent misses a ball.

The part in Deus ex Machina with the sperm and the song that goes with it and having your mom and gran sitting watching it.

Street Hassle is just a disturbing game fullstop, sidekicking grannies in the belly, choking gorillas to death, headbutting a fat man until he pops, picking up blind men and smashing their heads through the concrete floor, exploding birthday cakes, blatant racial stereotyping, fingering dogs, and the fact that when you lose you lie down on the floor and throw a tantrum like a spoiled child

The above is why Street Hassle a.k.a Bad Street Brawler/Bop n' Rumble has never had a modern update, you couldn't get away with half of it these days

Disagree. It does not have to be an accurate recreation, but at least get the tone right. It's just way too MUCH. And you have to hear it three times.

I remember Cosmic Wartoad being like some bad trip of a game, will have to fire that up for a session soon.

Travel With Trashman, Madrid stage. Somehow Spain sees it as acceptable to leave a bull in the arena while the cleaning staff collect roses that the crowd have thrown, and continue to throw, and cheer as the bull gores Trashman to death.

It's either that or Trashman somehow got mixed up with the matador, but in the absence of any explanatory text, I'm going with the crowd of demons hypothesis.

    Better crowd sound effect though!

First time I finished a level in Splat!, that "Yippee!" made me jump out of my skin!

Me to; until then I'd assumed that all synthesized speech on the speccy was destined to be s**t.

Our very own Ralf's 2007 game Chicks&Bricks provided the Spectrum with a much needed Breakout clone with some bright yellow and magenta soft porno pics of his ex-girlfriends in between each brickbusting challenge - in order to help you enjoy the relief of coming through a screen.
It is a quirky batnball-cum-nearnakedlady game and as such, I think, unique on the ZX Spectrum.
The 'disturbing moment' is after you have shot the lot on screen six, as the girl revealed has a diproportionately long back. Very worrying.
For those of you not skilled enough at Breakout but with adult sign in rights to WoS, here is the handy map created by Pavero

Yeah Ground Zero is a good shout - a pretty disturbing game overall (especially if you played it back then)

Evil Dead? - had a 'scary' loading screen I think

Theres a noise when you win Tug O War in the 128K version of Supertest that would have worked. Or maybe if it just played a victory tune or something that would have been better:grin:

Pyjamarama disturbed me somewhat as a kid. Not sure why or what.....it was just....disturbing.
Jetset Willy also disturbed me a bit. The monks, the razorblades, the entrance to hades, the big head thing in the chapel....all freaked me a bit.

Sonically - many games disturbed me. The birdy song when Chuckie Egg loads up.......pure terror. Blockbusters - again pure terror. There's many more I can't remember right now(thankfully).

Yeah i remember being a bit freaked by that big head in the chapel, i think it also appears near the rooftop (can't remember the screen name but i think its one up from the foot of the megatree).
