Your Most Disappointing Machine

edited October 2012 in Chit chat
Which computer / console that you have owned / bought has turned out to be the most disappointing? Of course, I know it won't be the Spectrum. For me it was the Wii, as I mentioned at the time:

What was yours and why?

even though i owned a CD32, its prolly the wii that was most disapointing. the major disapointment came from wanting to like it so much.

most fun i had on it was with 'world of goo' which was fantastic, but not enough to make me love the console any more.

i think i would have liked it more if i hadn't had a 360, but next to that its a bit of a poor cousin.

so that was the wii out of /speccy, amiga 500, cd 32, game gear, master system, gameboy, n64, game cube, game boy advanced, ds, 360, pc
  • I've only owned

    Rubber Key Speccy
    Amiga 500
    Sega Master System
    PS1
    PS2

To be honest I think they are all fantastic computers/consoles and wasn't disappointed in the slightest with any of them.

gamecube, though maybe I did not pay full price for that, not sure now

Game Boy Advance, the early ones were not back lit, bought it full price with doom, couldn't see anything on the screen, got a refund.

though, I have played second hand ones, and if I sit "just so" by a reading lamp in the armchair, I can use them, but at the time, I was peed off with it, and Game had a no quibble refund policy in force so I chopped it in

I quite like the Wii - RE4, Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy - unbeatable. Of course the likes of Excite Truck is urinated upon from a great height by Motorstorm, but then if I wanted an endless stream of HD murder simulators I'd have bought an XBox 360.

Anyway, most disappointing machine? The MSX. It was supposed to be a Speccy with a better and faster BASIC, multicolour graphics and cartridge game loading. What it was was an apalling bottlenecked architecture with next to no software support. At least I learned my lesson from that and easily avoided the SEGA Saturn.

  • Definitely the Wii.
Most games involve flapping your arm about and hopeing for the best.
Even traditional games were ruined by horrendous controls. I got fed up of shaking the Wiimote in Super Mario Galaxy after about 5 mins.
Motion controls and me just don't get along.

saturn has 10 player bomberman and there a few more titles to get it for.

I don't think I've own/owned a bad machine (I have a lot of 8 bit machines now) .. things like bad loading times and lack of software aren't so good.. e.g. atari 8 bit (20-30 minutes+ loading time in some cases) , dragon 32 et.

Saturn isn't complete pants, but I had a narrow escape when it was the latest gen, as I bought a PS1 on a whim, and luckily for me the game it was supposed to ship with had been replaced by Doom, which I had never heard of before :)

Nintendo DS easily. Quality of games is generally shocking. They even turned one of my fail-safe 'bound to be good on any system' games Arkanoid into one of the worst games I've ever played. Not to mention pricey. Big load of crap.

    Seriously?!

I think it's a great machine with some fantastic games!

I've never seen the appeal of a big chunky front-heavy handheld like the DS, especially just after Nintendo came out with the amazing GameBoy Micro. I'd list the DS as a disappointment too, but I didn't actually buy one.

    Sega Game Gear

Ordered it from my parents club book.I only could afford to buy Strider, The Sega 5 in 1 pack that was included with it, and a friend gave me columns for free as somebody gave him a dead game gear.

Why was the Sega Game Gear a disapoointment? The battery life - it was crap !

... If I ever buy another handheld, it will be open source or android - currently waiting for Archos GamePad :)

I've never really owned a machine that i didn't like but i suppose the original Xbox wasn't that great.
I flogged it after about a year and got a PC:grin:

I liked them all, but then I had played most of them before owning them so I knew what I was getting.

I've never owned a Jaguar, only looked after a mates one for a while, but I was nevertheless disappointed with that.

The Neo Geo CD. I was very slow at loading anything and the games wern't that much better playability wise than my SNES, so I stuck to that instead.

Oh, and every game was a fighting game (none of which were as good as SFII ... on the SNES).

An american video cassette system called Action Max, it was an unwanted christmas gift, and I knew it was ****e. Didn't even take it out of the box until one night when I was a bit stoned my mate convinced me to take it to his house and play on it.

It's still there now AFAIK?

look it up, how they even had the nerve to call it a games machine I don't know? Wish I'd keep hold of it now though it'd be a nice curio to have :D

Although technically not a disappointment, as I had no intention of using it ever, and actually had a damn good hysterical laugh when I finally did :D

So I guess the most disappointing system has to be the Wii, even though I quite like it, it's the one system I actually wanted, bought while it was still reasonably newish, and have barely touched. I don't play my PS3 much either at the min, but in almost 2 years since I've had it it's seen a lot more action than the Wii, and I've had that for about 3 years.

If the Wii's sole purpose was Netflix it'd be my fave machine ever

I'd have to go with the Sega MegaDrive. I'm sure it's gaming heaven to some people but it really did nothing for me. I suppose I was just far too into ST and PC games at the time to ever want to play anything on it.

I did "enjoy"* a few games on the Commode but overall that's the one that still sticks in my mind as a Most Disappointing Machine (Indeed!)

It was mainly the squashed pixels and long loading times (seemingly never-ending) that were disappointing.

That would be the Sinclair ZX Spectrum....

    (joke!)

Actually it would be the first computer I ever had which was a Commodore 16. Which was disappointing for obvious reasons. But it was soon remedied by selling that and buying a second hand rubber key 48k Spectrum :-).

Actually, the more I think about it the Wii has to be the second most disappointing machine after the C16 for me. I'm a lot like Boozie in that all it gets used for really is Netflix and it's not that great at doing that to be honest. My wife liked Twilight Princess though and I must admit it does look good, not my cup o tea though.

Fair enuff. I could never find any decent games. Having said that, whenever I looked for games on it I would be sifting through racks and racks of long-winded 'solving clues' type games, which I have no interest in... Maybe if you're into those kind of games it was better?

the ds is great because of the emulators available, and the fact that its a relativly easy machine to pirate games on.

there are some decent games for it, from fps, stratergy, platformers, and racing games.

Not exactly a bad machine, but certainly the weakest in my collection... The Commodore 64.

Good for playing early shoot-em-ups, but scant else. Now and again it's good for a change, but it's not long before I'm hankering for some proper gaming. Something to get 'involved' in.

    raid over moscow
    kung fu master
    kik start 2
    the thalamus games
    uridium

    etc etc

some were better on the speccy some were better on the commode and both had plenty not on the other

There is an awful lot of crap on the DS I have to admit. But also some real gems.
There are loads of RPGs and Turn based strategy games plus other great games like Castlevania, Phoenix Wright, Gta.
But it's mainly the strategy and rpgs that I love it for. And of course all the great emulators.
