help with zynaps explanation

has anybody idea how exactly Zynaps works ?
it seems that sprites are overlayed by background. are sprites putted first and then background is drawed or what ?

I'm not sure technically, but having played it to no end, I have noticed that the main sprite can be overlapped by the background object, which would be the case if the background is drawn AFTER drawing the main sprite.

But I suppose it's better to await a technical opinion.
