Chrimbo pressies you never got

With the Chrimbly season approaching...

When I was a young 'un (not sure what age but it was probably prime speccy time around '84) there were a couple of Christmasses where I wanted a Mr Frosty. For those not in the know it was basically a plastic thing that crushed ice and made lollies etc. For some reason mum and dad either couldn't find it, or (more likely) decided they weren't buying this tosh. Yeah, cold drink maker as a Christmas pressie. Great idea :D

mr-frosty.jpg

Even with the gift of hindsight I don't know why I was so keen to get it but I do remember being disappointed when it didn't turn up.

What Chrimbo presents did you never get? Did you get them later and did they turn out to be great or disappointing?

Only 1 Christmas, I went on and on and on for months about wanting a train set, come Christmas morning I opened the big box and it was a Mamod Steam engine...This one...(which seem to go for quite a bit of money now!). Though in the photo it looks like its got a servo/battery on it?! Mine was a methylated spirits burner and real steam etc...maybe they don't let the kids play with fire anymore.

    Mamod%20Steam%20Tractor.jpg

At the time I was thoroughly pissed off (but didn't show it) I was about 8yrs old.

Later as I got in my teens I came to appreciate it and it was probably a better gift as it was somewhat educational etc...the science teacher even asked me to bring it in to demonstrate to the class when we were studying steam or something.

EDIT: Grrrr now you've got me looking for Mamod steam tractors on Ebay...more expense!

    Amiga.

Never got one for christmas, and let's face it, that'd be the only time I'd ever have got one for the ludicrous amount of money they cost. Played on a few of my mates, wasn't really bothered that I didn't get one, over the years I became glad I didn't get one.

When I finally got one for free I played around with it for a while, got bored and shelved it. Never really liked the Amiga that much and I can't help but feel if I had've got one I'dve actually went outside and played footy or something instead

The Miggy is OK for fiddling with, but all the games seemed so shallow and crap, I can't explain it, but all the Amiga best sellers are all graphics and no game. The quirky games that maybe weren't exclusives were probably the best games for it. Rodland, Lemmings, Robocod, etc.

Hardly worth paying 500 (or more) quid at the time to play those games though, especially when the console versions were as good or better anyway :D

Ditto. Never got one either. Think it was the adverts that made it look so good.

Shadow of the beast 1,2, and 3.
    Gods.
    First Samurai, and Second Samurai.
    Wrath of the Dragon.
    galahad.
    Risky Woods.
    Wolfchild.
    Fatal Rewind/killing Gameshow.
    Atomic Robokid.
    blaster Master.
    Stunt car Racer.
    Hard Drivin'.
    race Drivin'.

...and about 2 million below par arcade conversions that were supposed to be great.
Yep the Amiga was very shallow, all graphics no game.

Let's face it the only Amiga games that had any real stamp were Monkey Island 1 and 2, Loom, putty, and Moonstone, and Moonstone only got props for the over the top gore, the gameplay is actually pretty clunky and awkward, like most Miggy games.

Big Trak. I've still never seen one in the flesh as none of my mates ever had one either.

Scalextric. I had Race N Chase though, which was great. Still can't get over that I left mine in my mums attic a couple of years back when she moved house. I had it in my hands to take with me and thought "Nah". One of my monumentally stupid decisions like when I binned every computer mag I'd ever purchased (from 1982 to 199x including lots of Crash's, YS's, C&VG's, etc).

I wanted a Big Trak like mad back in the day.. I played with my mates' ones a few times, and actually I would probably have gotten bored of it..

You can still get them brand new if you want to part with 30 quid... (Plus shipping).

The year I got my first Spectrum I actually asked for a BMX - before that I had no interest in computers whatsoever.

Obviously it was a godsend not getting one

Looks like someone's rigged that up to the steering, so you don't have to chase it around turning the doorknob on a stick.

I saved up my Xmas and birthday money and bought the Mamod road roller. The new ones use solid fuel tablets which I guess are marginally safer as you can't spill burning fuel. Shame though as the smell just isn't the same :(

I have a load of load of those Wilesco & Mamod steam engines in the loft. They're great fun (I'm such a nerd). They're still manufactured, I think. And although they do have trays that you put those solid fuel "firelighter" type tablets in, you can just as easily set fire to any old sh*t in there to power them :)

Casio DG10 Digital guitar. Good job too would have been a waste.
    img.jpg

Amiga 500, got an Atari STE instead.

Shockwave the transformer with tapes. Got lego instead, my parents thought it much more versatile, they were right.

I had more fun with my Race N Chase than any scalextric at the time. Great lights, cool seesaw bridge and the cars were faast. What more could you want!

I never received the gameboy I asked for. Got an Intercity 125 Hornby set instead. A year and a half later I received a Game gear for my birthday, much better than the Gameboy, v v happybday.

    Nice topic.

Can't find pictures now, but I remember my favorite thing to play with was Lego bricks, and I was absolutely crazy about the Medieval theme. Unfortunately my Lego collection consisted of multi-colour bricks plus one small Castle-themed set (some type of Inn) plus a train brick set not made by Lego, so I had to use my imagination a lot more.

None of these brick sets had been given to me as Christmas presents. Each year I would look at the new Lego catalog and dream of getting the big Castle set for Christmas. Never happened.

I had the big Lego medieval castle :-) it was ace. My brother smashed it up a couple of times though. That's the thing about Lego it wasn't compatible with younger siblings.

    Nice little retrospective here: http://deconstructingplasticbricks.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/evolution-of-castle-early-beginnings.html

Looking at that I'm pretty sure mine would've been the 6080 model

Wanted this, and my parents ordered one... but everywhere had sold out.

    imperial%20transport%20troop1.jpg

This arrived instead... only it looked nothing like the picture.

No cockpit, no detail, and wings didn't move.

    Still liked it tho. :)

I wanted the Grang Battle Set, as advertised on the telly. Instead I got the smaller "Battle Set". Most dissappointing.

Already mentioned on here by some, Race and Chase, Big Truck and Mr Frosty (Still dont know why!)
  • Strange how Mr Frosty has popped up a few times (it's not just me, then ). It must have been well-marketed to get into our noggins but parents still managed not to buy it.
