Cheap electronic kits for hobbyists/Students etc

edited February 2013 in Hardware
As prices start to get silly on ebay for electronic components like CPUs, Memory etc, I've sourced two suppliers from China that do me great deals.

G & C gc_supermarket : gc-supermarket@hotmail.com,

or

Funkward Technology Co.,Ltd

*Email: info@funkward.com

fMSN: paul_freejazz@hotmail.com
JPaypal: info@funkward.com

They'll put together bespoke kits Z80+SRAM+EPROM etc and bypass ebay. They can get lots of legacy chips:

Z84C0020PEC 20MHz Z80 CPU
R65C02P4 4MHz 6502 CPU
MC68008 8-16MHz 68008 CPU
HD63B09 2MHz+ 6809 CPU

SRAM 32kx8bit to 512kx8it DIP

EPROM & EEPROM, AT28C256,W27C512 etc

It's well worth getting them to quote a price before buying everything separate from ebay.

    Huh what?

Z80's can still be bought brand new, from large respected distributors like Farnell, Digi-Key, Mouser and probably others for 4~5 Euro a pop, ~3 Euro in larger numbers. 20 MHz versions more pricey but you only need those if you actually intend to run them >10 MHz.

On eBay all of these are cheaper (sometimes a lot), but there's always a chance you'll get fake / re-labeled chips, ones that look new but were actually pulled from a socket, fell off the back of a truck or something. ;)

SRAM's 32Kx8 aren't legacy but production chips, these start at around 2 Euro's a pop (again, brand new from well known distributors). 512Kx8 might be up to ~7 Euro a pop, cheaper if you shop around. eBay will have these cheaper still.

EPROM / EEPROM? Just be done with it & use a dirt cheap Flash EPROM instead.

The only expensive CPU's etc on eBay are vintage / ceramic parts. Stated prices for those are not what people pay for 'em, but what some idiots selling them think they're worth. New old stock / pulled NMOS Z80's in DIP housing are cheap & easy to find too.

As for shops: as a rule I don't buy from shops that don't list a real world address and phone number. Stuff bought on eBay possibly excepted if it falls under eBay / PayPal buyer protection.

Not saying anything about the names you posted (FYI: funkward.com gives "server not found" here, and a Hotmail address as business contact? Mmm... ). Have bought parts via eBay from shops like that myself, usually no problem but bottom line: you never know what you'll get (and often you'll need patience, ~3 weeks shipping from China isn't uncommon).

There was someone with a very similar Fleabay username selling kits for a basic z80 computer until very recently - I nearly bought one but the documentation that came with it was a bit scant for a novice like me.
