Could someone find the thread for me please?

Apologies but my searching skills on WoS are crap! I'm looking for the WoS thread from last year about the cheapo Android tablets that you could get from eBay. There were some recommendations on there that I want to look at as the mother-in-law is interested in getting one.

Thanks in advance!!

Not having much luck finding it. I remember a longer thread, but all I could find was this (from 2011):

    http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/showthread.php?t=33554

    and this:

Thanks for looking Bruno, but it's neither of those two. I *think* it was in Chit Chat.

Yes, the thread was quite long, and it's quite possible that it didn't start off as a discussion on tablets knowing how CC threads go all over the show!

There was definitely mention of cheap Chinese Android tablets, and how with ICS they've become quite good.

For some reason the search function for Chit Chat was disabled I think, so you only get older threads. I'm not sure why - maybe it cluttered other searches? I find it frustrating in the long 'currently playing' thread as I like to search through what WoS'rs have enjoyed playing.

This one "Hoping to build a zx spectrum laptop in future" is the right age and mentions getting cheap Android tablets on eBay - but there's no mention of China.

I'm totally ignorant on the topic - I stopped following new computing developments after Windows XP. Does ICS = ICs; ie. Integrated Circuits - or does ICS stand for something else? It might help with searching if I new what ICS meant.

Nope that's not the one either. IIRC there a picture of one tablet that had a detachable keyboard like MS's Surface (or maybe it was in a protective case that flipped open and allowed a small keyboard to be connected). It looked really naff but apparently was quite good. I'm sure someone on here said they owned it.

Oh, ICS = Ice Cream Sundae - version 3 of Google's Android operating system. I think I got that wrong anyway and its Jellybean (V4) that these cheap tablets use.

Hmmmm? Couldn't find your thread and I'm usually quite good at finding missing threads on ere'.

I did however end up reading through a few other threads in my search, some good laughs right there

I remember the thread well as I used one of the recomendations to buy a tab on eBay. It cost about ?55 and I'm quite happy with it, but I stumbled accross the same tab (using my buying history) and the same tab now costs about ?79 and it's not worth it at that price to be honest :-(

mr Grusso knows where it is..

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career.

    Bump!

Got one of these in the end - Archos 80 Titanium

    http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/ARCHOS_80_TITANIUM_WIFI_16GB

Most impressed with it. Nicely responsive, screen is very clear and typing doesn't feel like wading through treacle backwards! I love the iPad, but for something a third of the price this comes highly recommended.

?50 off the 16 gig version from Carphone Warehouse at the mo too (online only). Mother in law loves it and I'm considering getting one for myself.
