Chuckie Egg remake for Android / HTML5 / Windows

edited April 2013 in Announcements
I did a remake of this for Windows in 2006 and I've completely rewritten that remake for Android. And also released the new version for Windows and HTML.

This is based on the Spectrum version of Chuckie Egg.

Due to the number of controls and the fact that diagonals are crucial to playing the game, I've gone with tilt controls for left/right, with on screen buttons for jump, up, and down. The tilt controls are quite sensitive, and necessitated adding in some air control, unless jumping or belly bouncing. This does add alternate route possibilities which is quite fun.

The main criticism I've received is that the ladders are hard. Which is only true if you're doing them wrong! Jump/run past the ladder whilst holding up or down.

Yeah, only Chrome (and possibly other webkit browsers) supports that sound engine, I believe.

Firefox has no sound and isn't very smooth for me, hence the Chrome recommendation.

Nice one! It plays nicely on Safari too.

Where there is a single character gap you can just run across it. You only fall if you stop over the gap. This isn't true to the original gameplay.

That was a side effect of the changes for the tilt controls.

It was too hard on Android if Harry dropped straight down as he ran off the edge of a platform. I thought of widening the gap, but opted just to leave it as is.

The aim of the project was to get a playable version of Chuckie Egg on Android. I had to modernise the movement slightly.

Well done Pobbit! I've played the HTML5 version in Chrome and all worked fine. :)

Is the screen size a limitation of HTML5 or just the screen resolution you programmed it to be?

I had to pick a resolution and that was a good resolution for the Android version, so everything else gets the same resolution.

In the HTML version, you can always adjust the browser zoom level to make it bigger :-)
In the Windows version, keys 1 and 2 will toggle full screen (in game only, not on menu).

I Was sceptical about the game physics changes at first but after some more play I think you've done a cracking job. Just little things like the immediate jump left at the start of level 3 still works at treat, so you've obviously put a lot of effort into accurately recreating the original timing wise.

Thumbs up +1 +like, would recommend, a++++++++ transaction.
