If u are handy with a drill and soldering iron, then you can do the mod that somebody did on the website at the link below. He took the membrane out, drilled holes in the case, fixed real push button switched, and wired them up with the correct matrix. He them fitted the original rubber keyboard overlay onto the case and it look as a standard ZX Spectrum keyboard. The keys should in this case outlast the Spectrum, depending on the quality of the switches. I already purchased the switches, but did not get so far to do the mod.
Don't know if it is precisely what you were looking for, but Miguel and Ben designed an interface to connect an external PC keyboard to the Spectrum. See it on Ben's website.
The new membranes that RWAP sells are quite a bit more robust than the originals and are an easy drop in replacement, I've never felt the need to go any further than that.

Victor Trucco developed that idea further, mounting switches on a PCB. I build mine yesterday, but I have not put it inside TK90X case yet. The Victor's site is located at:

I have probably enough donor speccies to try this out on now.
*runs off to order some mini-switches*

It is in Portuguese, but I think that seeing the photos will be enough. :)
