Amazons new "free" mp3 policy
fair play to em, theyve now decided to give away the mp3 version of any cd you buy off them (not other sellers on there) so you get the cd and online mp3 version of the album for one price, and saves you ripping the cd lol
and apparently its going right back to any albums youve bought off them since 1999 :o
ive just opened my amazon cloud player and lo and behold 10 albums id previously bought appeared so i can play em while online :)
they say its to get more market share off itunes BUT....the cynics out there may say theyre doing it to buy public confidence after the taxes thing???

s'pose they can only do this for stuff they've actually got in mp3 format in the first place - just looked on my cloud player and it's added three albums in mp3 form to my cloud, but I'm pretty sure I've bought well over 50 CDs off amazon, on my current account.
on a related note I bought an mp3 off amazon the other day that was nearly unlistenable, the quality was something like 96kbps! had to bin it. wish they'd do 320s like every other mp3 store on the net
just had a look through my orders and adam ant cool zombie single wasnt added, prolly cos its a 7" and not available as mp3 on their site
and it says
"You may have noticed that 10 CD albums purchased from Amazon since you became a customer have been added to your Cloud Player library. These albums are now available for you to play or download from Cloud Player for FREE.
With AutoRip, when you buy any CD or vinyl record with the autorip logo from Amazon.co.uk, you'll get the MP3 version of that album delivered to your Cloud Player library for FREE. You can listen to your album everywhere, including on your Kindle Fire, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android devices."
it's a nice gesture but I don't think I'm ever going to want to download an album I already have on CD. more hassle to download it than rip the CD it onto computer imo
I downloaded all my bought CD's onto it last night, it's very useful!!
yeah I'm aware of the 'cloud' set up. didn't think of it that way though, good point...
Was it the now album with Gangnam Style on it? I bought that off amazon for my son's birthday party on mp3 rather than CD, so I can't even flog it on ebay! What a fool!
Generally, if it's free, you're the product. Is there DRM built in to the MP3 or are they looking at the statistics of what you're listening to and selling this on to a third party?
You bought the CD from Amazon so they already know what you're listening to, also how would the get statistics from an mp3 player without an internet connection?
You might have the CD but they don't know how often you listen to it etc. If you just download the MP3s, that's one thing. If you listen to them via some kind of cloud (or perhaps a player that reports statistics in relation to specific DRM), someone gets to know about it?
I guess I'm just paranoid about scAmazon. I'd be surprised if they did anything for free without there being some kind of wheezemongery involved.
Not quite. I think it'll be a little more subtle than that ;-) Although, I suspect anyone listening to Bieber may already have plenty of links to gay porn.
Now, if scamazon were offering FLAC copies of your CD with no cloudiness involved I'd be a lot less sceptical.
Incidentally, why do you call them "scamazon"? They're a shop who sell things, why would they scam you?
most free stuff gets customer loyalty in the long run.
one of thier customers was so happy he created this thread giving them great free publicity. :D
