Yup, I kicked a rhinoceros in the balls while standing on a sun playing an electric guitar while nuclear bombs and stuffs were exploding in the background. It was ok. (EDIT: It wasn't Stonkers though, sadly).
EDIT2: It was difficult repeatedly pressing the K (for kick rhinoceros) and G (for play guitar) key at the same time! Fun times.
Surely I can't be the only person in the world who finds the fact that this is featured on one of the most prominent news websites in the world, as a leading "technology news" item, an absolute tragedy.

F?cking hell.
In a 'meanwhile, in Syria...' kind of way? Yeah, I know what you mean. But the Beeb site carries a lot of 'news', and so there's bound to be a fair bit of guff included as well.
Interesting the note that they rigged the servers to run the universe at 10% speed for the duration of the battle to manage the processing load. It must have been excruciating to play at a tenth speed.
Although a replay would look amazing as everyone's reaction times would look 10 times faster.

From what I understand, no.
What people have told me is that it's not a game where you fly a ship with a joystick and press fire, it's the type of game where you're more like the captain - you give orders and they get carried out. It's more akin to a turn based strategy than a flight simulator.

Yes, the game's few nods towards realistic physics would make manual control practically impossible. Instead, you give the orders to a flight computer and it works out what to do from that.
mate of mine is pretty high up in the one of the "corps" that was involved....he should be, he's been playing with his internet spaceships for longer than he's ever held down a job or relationship...
So, I recommend anyone thinking about playing this - DON'T!
As far as I can tell players spend their entire time mining or sitting in space dock because it's too risky to go out on your own. There's even a spin counter to keep tabs of how many times the bored to death player has rotated their view to see their current ship from all angles......I prefer my combat more immediate but if anyone does want to have a crack I can happily pass on your info to Mutton (Karl Mason in game I think) and he can prob point you in the right direction

I wouldn't say that. I played I-War (one of the best space sim combat games made as far as I'm concerned) and I pretty always flew with the assists off - making it true newtonian physics based flight.

pretty impressive. when i play kerbal space program, it seems like i need 8 fingers on the go to sort out rcs thrust and ship positioning
