Quick dip-in, dip-out?

edited August 2013 in Games
My attention span isn't what it once was, so it's probably descended to somewhere near the level of my game-playing skills.

I played "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" on XBox last year and one of the things I really liked about it was being able to play for 5 minutes or 5 hours, depending on how long I had available.

So, what games would you recommend for a quick session that could lead to something longer?

I know it is a common game but Atic Atac is what I load up if I want a quick five minutes or spend longer playing and playing different r?les and going for speed games.

Depends what you like playing. I've been playing a lot of Star Raiders II lately (though you won't get it from this archive). You can fire it up and just enjoy blasting alien ships for a few minutes, or stick at it longer and try to defeat the whole invasion.
  • My quick play games are:

    Stop the Express
    Deathchase
    Chuckie Egg

I usually end up playing these for a lot longer than I originally intend to.

    Melvyn Hughes International Soccer

Play a single friendly, the Cup, or a whole season. The choice is literally yours

Thanks for all the replies so far, everyone.

I've tried two out this morning so far. I was a bit worried that ZnorXman's "Eric and the floaters" might be, well, a bit "crap" let's say, but it reminds me of Jonathan's "The Fantastic Mr Fruity" (which is a good thing!)

Also tried Star Raiders II - good blasting fun.
  • Buzzsaw is good for a 5 minute play. You may not be able to tear yourself away though!

Trashmans always good for a quick game

Jet Pac is always a blast to play. Anytime.

Trapdoor, Exolon and Rex are my other favs that are easy to get in and out of.

Hyperaction is a corker. Pick up and drop or not, usually not in my case.

Collect the 'ZX's, avoid the nasties, push the acorns strategically. Alternative graphics on the B side.

Atic Atac was a good choice as well as Deathchase

Also Mugsy and Diktator can be played from start to finish in 10 minutes, so are good for a quick blast

Killed until dead, It's multiload so there's some faffing about, but the games split into levels so you can play 1 or as many as you like.

IK+ I always thought was a great game that was easy to pick up & play.

Arkanoid, or your Breakout-a-like of choice. Not deep games, but certainly have that "just-one-more-go" quality.

for some reason arkanoid entered my mind too.

I mean in theory with the introduction of snapshots and emulators you can pick up and put down any game at leisure.

If you're stuck with a real spectrum any game that involves embarking on some kind of mission, but with no save function, is kind of out the window. JSW for example

    Yes - that's a great game! I've played that a lot - and Pariborotoo
I've never managed to beat the first level on this.

I've just had a go - finished the first screen after about four attempts, but there seemed to be a fair element of luck involved as to whether you start the screen by moving in a safe direction!

True - there are games such as LoM where I make heavy use of snapshots, but I played Chronos yesterday for the first time in a long time which is one of the things that got me thinking about potentially short games.

I find that games of Buzzsaw+ last a lot longer than five minutes! Definitely agreed on Pariboro.

BeTiled! is my favourite puzzle game at the moment. Buzzsaw+, Pariboro and BeTiled! all play well using touchscreens, so are fantastic for loading onto a tablet to pass the time while on the train.

I like to load Batty up for a quick couple of games every so often.
Some shooters are good for that as well such as 1942, SWIV or Fernadez must die.
