Were there any truly scary Speccy games?

edited August 2013 in Games
Having played numerous Survival Horror games on the PS1, PS2 and PS3 I started to wonder if there were any creepy games on the speccy. Due to graphical limitation I don't suppose there were any scary ones, but, I'm sure some must have been creepy.

I always thought 'Ah Diddums' was creepy, but, I'd like to know if there are any other.

Anything with that loader that went "SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" with the flashing border when it failed to load. Players/Incentive/Mirrorsoft used it as well as a load of magazine cover tapes. Scared the living crap out of me the first time I heard it.

I dunno, 3D Monster Maze on the ZX81 was relatively scary back in the day, and the graphics were a lot more restrictive than on the Speccy. As with all the best scary things, it was what you couldn't see that mattered.

caves of doom was pretty scary when that monster started chasing you across the screen

    Sentinel could get pretty tense...

I was going to mention The Rats and 3D Monster Maze too but got beaten to it!

Not that Frightmare was scary but it certainly was surreal enough, and would definitely be frightful on any of today's console.

Aliens when you shot at one and missed, and it ran at you, seconds to try and kill it if you're lucky.

The Fury - when you were really good and getting somewhere, the whole screen would fade out while you were racing along and 'the fury' (some kind of worm alien monster - going on 25 year old memories) would shimmer into view.

Sabre Wulf, when you enter a screen and come across the wolf, stopped in front of you!

Maybe Nosferatu the Vampyre is close to modern 'survival horror' concept. Scary atmosphere.

I remember it still to this day the first time I saw DEATH running after me and a friend in Gauntlet. It was the day I not only soiled my pants but my friend's pants also.

Another vote for the Rats. Yes, a very scary game. Equal to the book upon which it is based, maybe even more scary.

The Skull, when one of the giant skulls appeared in front of you and you didn't have any crosses and sometimes in Maziacs I would stop to bring up the map screen, only to find a Maziac scuttling towards my man.

I found Double Dragon quite scary when I first played it and remembered how much I paid for it.

The spiders in Wriggler, i used to hate the way they would scuttle across the screen, it still freaks me out.

Was just going to say that! Fantastic - if creepy - animation.

    I completely agree.
3D Monster Maze is by far the scariest game, no matter if you've already played before.
Feeling that the T-rex is behind you is unbelievable, even today.
Spectrum... Perhaps only certain moments, like say Sinclair logo, after loading Brian Bloodaxe. ;)
Games on newer platforms can be really scary, like Silent Hill or Doom 3, when I played them first time.

I don't think any Spectrum game scared me, but I agree about 3D MM, even today on an emulator it's a demonstration in how silence can be more terrifying than any audio.

    Pacman?

It may sound funny to some, but I was afraid of the ghosts in Fred. Mind you I was 11 at the time and easily impressed.

3D Deathchase is a scary concept. You're basically playing a psycho motorcyclist chasing after two other motorcyclists.

Also, I've never played this on the Spectrum, but the Electric Dreams version of Aliens recreates the suspense of the film very well and can be quite scary when you find those Aliens.
