Credit card fraud.

edited October 2013 in Chit chat
Some little **** has gone on a spending spree with my card. Mostly buying stuff from zavvi.com.

I've cancelled my card and its been passed to the card company's security team but is there anything else i should do.

The card company didn't seem that arsed but its driving me mad as i cant figure out how they got my details.

All that's needed to make online purchases is an image of both sides of the card. Those can be gleaned from a hidden CCTV camera next to a cash machine. There are more advanced techniques but card cloning is pretty common. I would suggest reporting the fraud to the police as if the card issuer try to claim you are liable you'll need the police report for any insurance claim. It all depends on if you've signed up to Verified by Visa or the Mastercard equivalent. If you have then definitely contact the police as those schemes essentially exist to enable the banks to commit secondary fraud.

I'm not signed up to verified and the card company have told me to just deduct the fraudulent payments when i pay this months bill.

Probably never find out how they got my details. Is proper annoying though as i try and be careful.

Don't worry about it. I've had my details stolen a couple of times, just had to change the card. Because it's a credit card you're fully insured and the thieves have no direct access to your money. You'll get a full refund.
This never used to happen until the internet came along.

The only time you'll get problems is if you use a debit card online. That is a big no-no.

    Then you're absolutely fine.

yeah, it's pot luck sadly - so far I've not been done but then I'm the guy who won't use a cash machine if it looks a bit tatty in case someone has tampered with it. Nor do I leave my card behind the bar running a tab or let it out of my sight when paying chip n pin (amazing how many people do that - and thus let the staff have hours to jot down your card info etc)

In fact I tend to just carry and use cash for almost everything, but that's just me

On the upside when people in my family have been done they were refunded with no fuss by the banks so while a bit annoying no harm done

I just checked on google play as one of the dodgy payments was listed as "google perry St SW".

Hmm? it's even easier with a telephone. Social engineering attacks don't work on computers :)

In the last year or so me and the wife have had our debit cards, and a couple of our credit cards compromised. I think I have a good idea of how it happened because we shop at a store that was hit by a massive cyber attack that basically swiped the details of thousands of shoppers.

Both credit card companies and the bank refunded us, and sent us new cards without too much trouble. Only thing is now though is if I use those cards or my bank card in a shop more than a mile from home I get peppered with emails and phone calls asking me to verify that it was me. I appreciate them looking out for me (by which I mean themselves), but it's a little annoying.

I get statements I can look at them, that's how I find out that something odd has happened.

The Anarchists Cook Book was teaching credit card fraud back in the 70's. It's more prevalent now, and easier, not just because of the internet, but because the banks give out credit cards to every Tom, Dick or Harry.

The internet created accessibility to credit card numbers and passwords, before that the thief had to be with you to gain the info (looing over your shoulder or stealing the carbon insert!!), now he can just buy it.

I had my debit card cloned, I believe in a dodgy petrol station shop. They made off with about ?1200 from my account before I noticed! Got it back, but it took about six weeks and I swear Barclay's thought it was me who'd done it or put someone up to it. The biggest clue, and something they didn't pick up on, was that my card was used in opposite ends of the country (Essex and Wales) simultaneously almost - minutes apart.

    Not pleasant at all.

very well known for it, esp at night.. the old double swipe.. once in their machine, and again in the petrol stations one.

a friend works servers are continually getting attacked, which I guess is the modern version of it.

One interesting thing that I found out (from a book called "Other People's Money" - written by a card fraudster) is that the customer gets their money back when they report it (or at least never have to pay that bit of their bill) but the credit card company charges the money back from the merchant - so the credit card company doesn't foot the bill either, it's the merchant that does.

In the particular instance (Other People's Money) the merchant couldn't possibly be to blame - since the author had fraudulently obtained an actual real credit card from the credit card issuer in his own name - basically he could show his own genuine photo ID to back up the card - meaning there was no possible way for the merchant to detect the fraud - but the merchant STILL got stiffed despite it being the fault of the credit card company that the fraud could take place.

got ripped off once by a theif in local shop, did one "cash back" once, to get money on my old Switch card, no cash points near by and was in pub, so bought a couple of items and got some cash. Didn't really notice at first that anything was wrong, then when I went back over account, sod was doing cash backs everytime I bought something, like milk or bread on my card, and pocketing the money.

not very bright, he was doing it to lots of other people according to the cops, had coughed to it, and I went to the police station with a paper trail showing that he'd not admitted everything and they hauled him in again

hardly cloning, stupid person was stupid and got caught
