In fairness to Uncle Clive - the C5 was not a terrible idea - just that the technology wasn't available to acheive the desired results.

Uncle clives problemwas always, to put it in movie parlance : 'Son you minds writing cheques your body can't cash' :)

Also the infrastructure of cycle lanes was not available then.
Also 17 year old students could get car insurance that was not four figures.
It really is a case of an product ahead of its time.

But a C5 would only block the cycle lane and hold up the cyclists!

The battery technology wasn't really up to the job of the C5 at the time, true, but it's real problem is still an issue - anything where you're seated that low, out on the roads, is just asking for trouble.

Also, look a little closer. That's not a capsule cockpit - you're expected to stand up behind the raised screen and ride the thing on the road like a hands-free Segway. Looks seriously dodgy to me - a rear-end shunt would flip you over the back and neck-first into whatever hit you.

If I could get my hands on a non-functional C5 (it would be sacrilege to modify a working one!) I'd like to replace the drive train with the motors/ESC/batteries I use with radio control helicopters. I suspect I could make a C5 be something fairly terrifying :-) The Li-Poly batteries for a 600 or 700 class (44 volts nominal, 12 cell) can discharge at a furious rate - typical continuous rating for these batteries is 30C (that's to say, if it's a 3.7Ah battery, it can safely discharge at 111 amps and usually peak double that). 111 amps at 44 volts gives you 4.8kW or about 6.5 horsepower. A brushless motor this powerful fits easily in the palm of your hand. (A big problem is torque - I've had the motor in the T-Rex 600 strip the teeth off its metal main pinion in flight)
