What is the best Final Fantasy?

edited January 2014 in Chit chat
I've recently found a new love for RPG's (mostly with Phantasy Star), so I guess the next step is to try Final Fantasy.

They are all available at the PS Store (well... I could just download them, but I want to play them on the PSP).

I remember playing FF7, back when it came out. it looked good, not enough to hook me, but I was working allot back then, and I remember I stopped playing it because I couldn't remember at what point of the game I was.

is there a better FF? I read FF4 & FF6 are supposed to be really good, and that FF8 & FF9 are somewhat disappointing...

what would you guys recommend?

Probably crashing down in my personal chartered jet crewed exclusively by Eastern European lingerie models.

What a way to go :D

I haven't played these games you mention...
  • I've only played 1,2 & 4.
4 was the best. I know that's not very helpful sorry!

There's some debate among FF fans about the later ones (FF7 onwards), some reckon 7 is better, others 8 etc. I wasn't that keen on the last one I played (13), I quite liked the battle system but it was all a bit linear, there wasn't all that much exploring that you could do and the side quests were all a bit samey.

So the bottom line is I don't really know, maybe just pick one and see how you get on... FF6 might be a good one to have a shot at.

I can't stand FF I've tried to like them, but I just don't.

One day I may give them some time again?

Did you get to the world map? I thought it was fairly tedious until that point, which is about 4 to 6 hours in - depending on your play speed.

Same with FFVIII and FFX; both took a while to get going. FFIX hooked me quicker, for some reason. Those are the only ones I've played (VII - X).

Must admit I hate the random battles in Final Fantasy games. These days I'd rather play Oblivion / Fallout style RPG's.

Yeah, it tends to be a bit of a grind. That last few (FFXII and FFXIII at least) don't have the same random encounters every few steps, you can try to avoid enemies if you want to. FFXII worked in real time, which I thought made a bit of a change.

I remember my brother playing FF7?8? Whatever, and he got to the last boss?
Sepiroth? Took him an hour to fight him and he lost haha! Apparently alot of dicking about doing boring stuff to get magic. That's why I never played it or World of Warcrap or Runescape etc.

VII is very good - it has the best story and the materia magic system is very nice indeed.

IX is superb and could have been the best except for the last disc which is quite a change and seems to have been just tacked on to make the game 4 discs long.

XII is probably my favourate. I think they ripped of Star Wars KOTOR's fighting system for it but they managed to improve upon it also and have a much better overall game too.

The only Final Fantasy game I've enjoyed enough to persevere with for any significant length of time is Mystic Quest.

FFVII on PSone back in the day. Cos it's the only one I actually completed all on my lonesome lol.

I've tried FFVIII a few times but I couldn't get into it. More of a time issue with me with games like this these days.

    VIII is the best one..

I know it's pretty rudimentary stuff. But it's fun, the music is really good and keeps the "RPG Frustration" level down to a minimum. FF4 is another game in the series I especially enjoyed too!

At least you can see (or hear) them coming! :)

In FF, what irritates me most is when I'm exploring some area, trying to investigate every nook and cranny, and every few steps it suddenly drags you into a battle. I don't mind it on the world map as much.

Go play 6 (that's 3 in western 'counting'). No super-long summon animations that cannot be skipped and all that crap that came with later versions. Likable characters and a pretty good story too. Certainly one of the most polished SNES carts ever made.

It seems you are spoiled for choice on PSN.

I'd go with VII for your first.

FFI & II are a bit creaky and old these days...haven't played III....

IV & V are where you can see the more recognizeable features from later games start to appear and are quite fun from what I've played of them, but seem a bit trickier than later games in the series!

VI is my 3rd favourite and has a great story and characters! Definitely the best pre-PS1 Final Fantasy! :)

VII was my first and favourite, VIII was my second but I thought it took a long time to get to the good stuff..IX is a very close 2nd to VII and has a very traditional fantasy feel to it!

X is okay but a bit too odd storywise...never played XI...XII is pretty good but feels a lot like a Star Wars rip-off, but I've not played much of it..and have still to get back to XIII as well! :)

I'd say VII, IX and XII are the best. VII has the best story, IX has some brilliant bits in it (The Black Mage Village was phenomenal when it's populated), and XII has the best combat mechanics.

I did like VIII aswell, but the twists in the story towards the end were crap. The best in VIII to me was the off shor rig type building where you've to fight one of the Weapons at the bottom to get a summon. Loved that whole section even though it took about 6 hours to get from top to bottom with no save points in between. I think I was a bit underpowered when I started it

    -edit-
Do NOT start with XIII. Compared to the rest it's crap. XIII-2 improved upon it but the combat is still useless. Let's hope XIII-3 is better.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

  • VII is my favourite. Played it to death on the PS1.

Is this Wookiee moonlighting as Smooth McGroove doing the battle theme? ;-)

    That's strangely amazing :D

The live orchestra version of One Winged Angel is among my fave tunes ever along with some songs from Silent Hill 1 and 3.

I can't find the one I love, but this is pretty close if you skip the blethering at the start.

This one is with Nobuo Uematsu's band (Uematsu was the composer for the game and he's the one with the 'tache on the keyboards).

    Lucky sod! :p :p

A mate saw an ad on Sky Arts about a live orchestra doing game music starting around the 18th Jan. Can't see anything on the Sky Arts website about it but he's recording it for me. Hopefully it's a good show.

The "Terra" theme from FFVI is one of my favourite tunes....must have about 20 different versions of it saved in my game music folder! :D

    Here's an orchestral version :)

Sod Final Fantasy, I always feel that warm and fuzzy nostalgic feeling when I hear this :D

It suited the part of the game it was from so well...

That's quite nice. I bought all the early FF (1&2, 4&5, 6) releases on the PS1 but haven't actually played them so it's good to hear music from the pre-VII games. And I've got unboxed II and III on the SNES (I think it's them, dunno where the carts are)

I agree. Out of all the Square JRPGs that I played back when I had loads of spare time, Chrono Trigger (and Chrono Cross) were certainly the most enjoyable and memorable.

'Caverns of the Snow Witch' without a doubt, closely followed by 'Talisman of Death'
