The controls take a bit of getting used to; my instincts keep making me try to move diagonally to avoid and shoot the enemies. Once you realise that you need to just move on 2 planes and adjust your movement tactics, it gets a bit easier.
I actually quite like the flashing border now, though it was a struggle playing it yesterday with a bit of a hangover.. :-P

you may want to try some of the pokes published by mcleod_ideafix here http://foro.speccy.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3688#p38885
the first code in green is for removing the flash border, the last code is for changing to wasd+space
In the same thread, you can find another version of the game for score competition, it has a matrix effect and just one life. Download
I managed to kill a few bugs of the third level on my first play of today, afterwards I went to suck again.
If you want to make it harder, go for the bug shooting at the moment or take out the same color ones in a row
My initial thoughts were "this is a bit like Zone Ranger" though that's a C*******e 64 game so at least some of you won't have played it. Very good but not fond of the constant flashing borders.

Great Zone Ranger!
I though that Zone Ranger is fusion (asteroids+creativity). Or an evolution of this.
Glauzone takes the transpassing screen to the other side from Asteroids. But remember a bit of Bosconian... for me, of course.

Joystick support and an open screen / selection, It would be my suggestion for an upgrade.

I think so, ... maybe Games Designer?

The border flashing is fine to me.
