    W00T! :o

After years and years Vapourware starts to solidify! :o

    Is it really happening?

    Talk about a surprise...
    Every night is curry night!

Wow, this looks totally amazing and awesome :o :o
Along with Abbaye des Morts, this is one of the most impressive things I have seen in the Spectrum lately...

Now this is going to happen!
I can only repeat after Alessanro - if Sanchez is behind it, he'll finish it and it'll be top quality.

It may be not called Castlevania, it may have an original story not directly based on any existing Castevania but it IS Castlevania game

For those who don't know the whole story - there was some Castlevania project announced over 10 years ago ((https://web.archive.org/web/20050310170733/http://www.redeya.com/bytemaniacos/castlevania.html) but it unfortunately turned to be vapourware. Now it's a different project and it's real as you can see in the download.

Very impressive already and a good musician on a board.
    Good luck Sanchez!

The demo plays really nicely, impressive stuff! Can't read any of the text, of course, but fingers crossed that won't be too big a deal. Great work!

This looks absolutely amazing! If this came out back in the day it would have made somebody quite rich heh!

I am a messenger of good news.

The game is 95% ready as Sanchez says. And I can confirm it, actually I had my little part in the project and yesterday finished English translation of it ;)

It is now called "Castlevania. Spectral Interlude" and as I understand it is an original story, not a remake of existing Castlevania game.

It has cool Castlevania style music, lots of monsters, bosses and improved, detailed graphics (sometimes sprites are hard to see in it but you get used;) )

Still nothing will be released until it is 100% ready, I don't know when it happens.

    Some teaser screenshots :)

    wowee zowee

That looks heaps better than the (almost) monochrome demos I've seen before. The graphic art looks great.

Is gameplay and plot along the lines of a Metroidvania games? If this plays anywhere near as well as the NES castlevanias it will be amazing.

Unfortunately I didn't played NES parts, but we tried to make it similar to metroidvania style. With some abilities, backtracking and hidden rooms.

This game is looking more than awesome so far, its going to have a good adventure factor too, as there will be texts, the graphics look very good, the music... prove that this game could have be done back in the day in an excellent level, as we also saw with the russian version of Prince of Persia.

Looking forward to seeing this soon!
  • edited July 2014
Ivan, will you be doing Spanish translation maybe? :)

Yes, there is a lot of text. Of course if you are "hack and slash" guy you can fastforward it all and still enjoy the game. But don't do it, it really helps to build the climate.

From what I've seen the game is big but not huge and not tedious, you can probably complete it in 2-3 hours which seems perfect for me. Like in recent Castlevania games during gameplay you obtain new abilities - think of stuff like high jump or teleport which make unaccessible places available now.It has also most of well known monsters from Castlevania series - skeletons throwing bones, mermans, flying bats, zombies. If you like Castlevania games, you'll feel like at home :)

    sounds perfect!

I'm going to try this on my 3ds (heresey for some I know); but this sort of game is perfect for a little handheld.

This looks fantastic! It'll be the first Castlevania game I give serious attention to - for some reason, none of the official Castlevania games I've tried have grabbed me :(

    Have you tried :

    Dawn Of Sorrow (DS)
Dracula X, Rondo of Blood (PC Engine)
    Castlevania III, Dracula's Curse (NES)

Realise they are different systems, but there are decent emulators for them (especially if you own a DS/3DS). Dracula X is considered by many to be the best of the entire series.

    yes, have you tried:
Harmony of Dissonance (GBA) and Aria of Sorrow (GBA)?
Dawn of Sorrow (DS), Portrait of Ruin (DS) and Order of Ecclesia (DS)?

Konami put Castlevania out for the C64.

It sucked. (To expect it to be as good as the NES version would be dreaming, but I am convinced the C64 could have done better).

    The AVGN did a multi-part Castlevania-thon

So, fingers crossed for a Spectrum Metroid?

Weesam, so will see what you will get here.
This is not a strict port of any Castlevania. You will not break the candles to collect hearts here. Or coins/bags will not drop from monsters. But you can jump into the ladder or jump down from it, for example. Gameplay is a bit changed comparing to classic Castlevanias.

I know I've tried the SNES ones, one on the original XBox (there might be more on the XBox, the one I played was 3D and started in a castle, I think), the two on the N64, and maybe the NES ones (not sure about the NES). But I'll try the ones you two recommend, except maybe the DS ones, as I have emulators for the PC Engine, NES, and GBA, but I don't know how DS emulation is I did mean to buy one for the Spectrum emulator (since my PSP died), so I might get one sometime, or perhaps I can emulate it to try the games you name if DS emulation is now of good quality).

One of the (many) games I've never played but mean to is Super Metroid.

Actually, most of the Metroids are on that list, as they are all supposed to be very good (apart from maybe Metroid M on the Wii?). I've only played Metroid Prime 1 and 2, and they are excellent (once you realise that they are NOT first person shooters and so don't try to play them as such (they are terrible first person shootings, what with lock-on-and-never-miss auto-aim, no straf (move sideways) controls, enemies that re-spawn every time you enter the room, etc), but once you realise that it's a first person explorer/problem solver, with lots of shooting, then you realise it's a very enjoyable and well designed game, and MP1 is my favourite ever Gamecube game). Sadly, MP3 is Wii only, and I can't stand motion controllers.

But Super Metroid is supposed to be an AAA game amongst AAA games. And someday I will get around to it, when I have the unbroken stretch of time to devote to it...

On topic, is there a Metroid style game on the Spectrum? You know, one where you have to collect items and weapons to open up new areas that were previously blocked off? Ultimate's Underwurlde, is a little like that, but there's not a lot of backtracking in Underwurlde, so it doesn't count - a Metroid style game involves lots of going back and forth across the ever expanding map, finding new items/weapons/abilities that allow you to open up new areas, or pass/kill obstructions. Such a game almost has to feel epic to be a Metroid game.

Actually, I'll create a topic, asking does such a Spectrum game exist?

I think you'll be disappointed. He said Metroid, and somehow you've automatically changed the subject to Super Metroid. No, I don't think games for the SuperNES with its memory requirement exists right now for the 48K speccy (not without multiload anyway.)

In the Spectrum scene they're usually called "arcade adventures". Do you know if there are any arcade adventures on the Spectrum? (I hope so.)

You can always try the Spectrum rendition from this year, called Samitroid, authored with the Churrera, an entertaining platformer with some object finding touches:

I talked to Sanchez and he told me that the game will be probably ready by the end of August.

He's doing intro and final cut now and there are going to be testers who will help to find the proper game balance (wow, that's professional ! :) )

So let's wait, we will be rewarded :)

Personally, I didn't like it that much. It must have been great back in the day, but after having already played Metriod: Fusion and especially Metroid: Zero Mission it didn't feel that great.
Actually, most of the Metroids are on that list, as they are all supposed to be very good (apart from maybe Metroid M on the Wii?). ... Sadly, MP3 is Wii only, and I can't stand motion controllers.

Actually, I enjoyed Metroid M very much as well. IMO they managed to capture the mood and atmosphere of the other 2D metroid games perfectly. I didn't mind the cut scenes which most people complained about. The only slap in the face was there was not a single award for completing it on hard, not even a save title change saying you did so. Which felt weird, especially considering normal game gets nice "after completion" bonus in further extended game.

And I think MP3 plays great on Wii. I think I enjoyed it even more than MP2, and almost as much as MP1. Actually, if you have Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii, you can play all three with a Wii controller. I would say you are missing here if you don't like the controller, as for example for me RE4 for Wii is the definitive RE4 edition.

To get back on topic, I am looking forward to see this Castlevania finished. I tried many of the DS and GBA ones, some I didn't like, but I enjoyed some other ones enough to play them to completion (and maybe even NG+).

What happened to the Castlevania ZX Preview by Radastan? It looked promising in 2003 and I loved the monochrome graphics with a dash of carefully placed colour.

This version looks awesome though but its an original story and I'd still like to see an identical port of the original by Radastan. Any news on this?

Why not ask Radastan? This is different game thread by me...
