Any Ideas why this was done ?

Looks like a lot of effort went into this board. Any clues as to why from the pictures ?

    Ease of future repairs (sockets, modified membrane holders).
    Slightly confused by the alternative power socket tho.

    Obviously the internal voltage converter was removed and substituted by a new power jack that has to be supplied by 12V (5V) and -5V.

    I've socketed all the RAM chips on one of my "other behated 8bit computer, featuring 15 shades of brown" for fun/to convert it to a RAM-chip tester ;)
