Final Fantasy 7

edited May 2014 in Chit chat
So after all this years I've finally given a proper go at FFVII? And I must say I'm blown away by it!

I've played it a little back in the day, but didn't play that much (I never went past disc 1, and right now I've long passed the place I was back in 2000).

First of all, I just don't get it why it didn't appeal to me back in the day? I'm still not a big fan of the fighting system, and I was much more in to games like Resident Evil back then? so it might have been a graphical thing (that is also stupid, the graphics on this game are amazing for the era).

I've spent most of 2013 playing old school RPG's (all of Mega Drive Phantasy Stars) so that might have helped getting in to FFVII.

but what is blowing me away is the scale and diversity of it. Sure some of the stuff in it seems outdated by now, it has an ambiguous eco-terrorist message that I doubt would pass in a post 9/11 world? but I really feel like I'm in to a interactive book or film, with all elements, comedy, horror, action? and I've just reached disk 2!

One of the best game experiences I've had in ages.

So who else played it? back in the day and more recently?

give me some feed back!

IMHO I rate FF7 as the best having completed it twice. This first time around must had taken about a year on and off. The only monotonous part was fighting countless battles to get all your vital stats, spells, etc, etc. relatively high in order to beat the final boss (Sephiroth) although there might had been an easier way - and I don't do things by half lol. The second time I completed it was via ePSXe emulator about two years ago. Right handy using SaveStates heh heh.
  • Never played it but I've been meaning to for ages.

It was my first proper JRPG, and I actually bought a PS1 with the intention of getting FF7 (and Resident Evil) after playing it for hours on a console I borrowed from a mate!

Random battles are always annoying, but the sheer scope of the game drew me in, and the characters and story kept me playing in to the wee small hours! Must have played it constantly day & night for about a week I reckon, but I never managed to finish off the last boss until I cheated years later with AR codes! :D I've since completed it properly, but I'll definitely be going back to it again. I still haven't raised a Gold Chocobo, y'see!

The music is always good in Final Fantasy games..and I liked the little mini-games at the Gold Saucer, and snowboarding, bike riding etc....Oh, and I reckon the Materia system is by far the best one for using Magic, etc. It was very easy to get to grips with, unlike a lot of the other things they tried in later games like the spheres in FFX or whatever...

So yeah, probably my favourite Final Fantasy...although IX comes a very close second! :)

Yeah, agree with that. I think they got it bang on and, for me, later FF games tried to get too complex. Some of the later games are very good but VII is just amazing (especially for its time).

Love FFVII. It's got a brilliant atmosphere, involving storyline and great characters. It's funny, moving and quite creepy at times.

The regular battle theme is one of the best tunes in gaming history.

I remember there being a huge buzz about this game before it came out, i didn't know anyone in the village i grew up in who had the internet and i didn't buy magazines yet just by word of mouth this game seemed to be getting attention.

I remember a friend showing me this game back in 98 and i dismissed it and remember at the time saying "What you have to wait your turn to hit the enemy, sod that".

It wasn't until late 2000 that i, disillusioned with games i spent my not so hard earned giro on only to be given maybe 2 days worth of gameplay before i finished it decided to give it a go. I remember from all the pre-release buzz that it had "over 100 hours of gameplay" and thought if i can get used to the "wait for your turn" mechanic i might actually get my money's worth.

I remember that christmas 2000 i only left my room to go to the toilet and at the last possible minute so as not to miss out.

This game was my introduction to the RPG genre and i'd say it's still my favourite JRPG.

VII was my first RPG aswell. Brilliant game.

I think I managed to do everything except get Aeris to learn her ultimate limit break. The gold chocobo was easy but time consuming. The Weapons ranged from easy (Ultima and Emerald (even without the underwater materia)) to hard (Ruby). The only thing I really had a problem with was the dig site to get back into Midgar. I had really crappy luck with that.

I even managed to get ribbon accessories for every playable character and I found a way to upgrade the strength stat (I think) by morphing a certain creature. I even found some creatures in the battle arena that I've never encountered anywhere else and they're not even in the official guide

I always got distracted by the snowboarding game :D
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Before FF7 I had played and loved fallout 1 and 2.
There was incredible hype surrounding this game and I was an rpg fan so I bought it. It was as if all the things fallout brought to the table had never happened. The whole game was linear and scripted. Your job was to guide cloud across these pre rendered backgrounds, not really having any choice of what to say or where to go.

I completed it while I was at Uni back in 98/99 or so.. Very good game as I remember it. Only thing I can remember that was a bit annoying

I got bored playing FF7 after a couple of minutes, and I generally like RPGs and I've played many of the first FF's. I'm just not sure why I didn't like it.

But I was wondering, if I should revisit it again many years later?
