Haunted House (Tyler / Howarth)

edited June 2014 in Sinclair Basic
I've spent a little time typing in the listings of Haunted House from Write Your Own Adventure Programs for Your Microcomputer, including the Spectrum and ZX81 versions.

They can be found here.

Once I'd done the initial keying, I also did a couple of ports -- to Ansi C, and to Inform 6. The latter can be played online, thanks to the Parchment interpreter.

As it is, the Spectrum version is almost exactly as given in the book (I had to tweak the parser slightly to avoid errors when slicing strings). It would be nice at some point to do an 'advanced' version that makes proper use of colour, sound, redefining the font, and upper and lower case.

The Inform port is a mite more sophisticated than the original BASIC version, and probably has a range of exciting new bugs. If anyone finds a problem or has a suggestion for improving it, it would be nice to know.

Cool! I love this kind of works! :)
A few years ago I bumped into a copy of another ancient "Haunted House" text adv, this TRS-80 game, and made a port for an Amiga remake-comp. The text part was almost identical and then I added a few graphics, some background music, and an auto-map feature.
Later on I made an Inform 7 version meant to be played at an Speed-IF comp with the guys at the IF-MUD. No multimedia add-ons this time, but I wrote some plot and added a few characters over the original mapping. It was a lot of fun (well, my poor english writting made for most of the fun XDD). A polished version, proofreaden by native english speakers, will be on-line, using parchment, anytime soon.

Incidentally, as noted at its WOS entry, "Write Your Own Adventure Programs" had a spanish release, which served as inspiration for many sppecy adventure fans back in the days.

Oh wow, I remember that one and the book. Had another of those OSBOURNE books. But I remember the atmospheric picture of the house (the one in the book, looking suitably knobbly, dusty and decrepid) and the map. Was very new to adventures, and that book got me mapping out one without a clue what I was doing. :)
