punch out made of colorful blocks

edited October 2014 in New game ideas
I was wondering if a punch out game just made of colorful block squares could be made (I know Bobs SplATTR works just fine ...)
. ..it could be very colorful and fun...

  • Punch out with Speccy game characters would be good.

    What's Punch Out?

    The Nintendo boxing game?

I've been thinking of doing something similar when I finish my next game...

I was thinking thta it would be great to have it with big characters made of blocks...but if you do this with your wonderful graphics WOW this will really blow everybody's mind (including mine)!:D

Don't know about blocks, too low resolution for me.

Looking at the NES game I see it has a flat background. So we could go with some coloured sprites. Even with color clash, I think it's doable.

Checking some online images, I think that the worse case would be something like this (straight conversions, can be much better if manually tweaked):
    zx1.png
    zx2.png

If the sprites start/end their movements aligned with the attributes, its perfectly decent I think.
At least the NES screens seem to show alignment.

Some of the sprites are here:
    http://www.spriters-resource.com/nes/punchout/
    http://www.nes-snes-sprites.com/MikeTysonsPunchOut.html

I'm aware that there are two versions. For conversion, I'd favour the simpler Punch Out, since it has less sprites.

I can convert them to scr / bmp if needed (I like doing that).
But only after a programmer steps up, because some things that can only be decided with the code in mind...

I wonder if this could be recoloured in some way?

It could look great. If the sprites move eight pixels at a time then it would look awesome. Eight pixel movements might look choppy though, not that that in and of itself would be that much of a problem, but might make the game easier. Still, I think it would be great. Otherwise make colorful background and keep characters mono.

NES graphics convert well, they are 8x8 based.

But as I said before, the only bottleneck is finding a programmer.
Graphics is easy, there enough graphic people here to get the job done.

Desperately biting my tongue because I don't have the time to do this.. but I'd love to. I wrote a prototype for a Punch Out clone on PS Vita a few years ago - all swanky and 3D but the puzzle mechanic at its heart was pure Punch Out. Sadly the prototype never went anywhere and I would love to revisit this mechanic.. but.. too many other irons in the fire I'm afraid ;(

    Well, that's life :-)
But if you ever seriously think about giving it a try, just PM me.
Doing / converting proper usable graphics will also take time, so no rush, it's the sort of thing that can take months.
