Kyd Cadet 3

edited August 2014 in Brand new software
Finally, thanks to R-Tape, this new game can be released.
Full info about how it came about etc, on my blog.

Its a kind of Exolon clone, but (obviously) not as good

Enjoy.

Yep - very reminiscent of Exolon, but it plays great.

Nice mix of stuff-to-shoot and stuff-to-avoid. The last screen was a tricky one.. ;-)

I like the way there are some emptyish screens to give you a bit of respite from the more troublesome areas.

    I liked it much :)

I like it! I like the defender-esque explosion when you destroy an enemy. Cool!

Well done. I still love seeing fan-made games released for the Speccy. Keeps the spirit of the Spectrum alive by far. :D

good fun. the aliens are pesky, gives it a one-more-go factor :)

A brief play, very good one, is it great that Kyd Caded is back!

Completed it with save/load feature in emulator :)
Really nice graphics, pleasant game mechanics - I like game where you can shoot an enemy, not just jump over it.

Any Exolon clone is always a good idea for a new game. Great! :-)

Just played it through, very enjoyable. A bit like Antiquity Jones in terms of difficulty, and like that I wish it went on for a little bit longer. In fact I didn't collect every O2 in case they were needed for the return journey.

I was going to say I was glad you removed the annoying Cybernoid thing of a baddy appearing at the right getting you at an unfair moment, but I've had a couple of those moments (much less than Cybernoid itself though).

Taking time to look at the game, to me at least, it does seem to be running under debug conditions. The oxygen should be set at 20 rather then 50, this would produce a more challenging game. Also I have noticed a few continuity errors in the backgrounds and the end boss should take at least 6 hits (rather than 2) to destroy.... oh well... in my eagerness to get it out, it would seem I let a few things go...

I could fix the problems, but would need R-Tape to work his magic again...

On which note... Thanks R-Tape for your invaluable efforts in getting this game out. A supreme effort that made a huge difference, without which the game would have never been seen.

A bit off-topic, but as a not very known fact, the monsters in Cybernoid actually do have an area to not respawn if you're near the border of the respawn area. This area is 3x16 pixels (IIRC) when the monsters are spawning from the bottom.

You can even check this in the second screen where the monsters are spawning for the first time. If you just let your ship fall down and not move up when it touches the floor, then no more ships will be spawn.

Future Looter has this trick too, but in that game the "stop-respawn area" is a bit larger.

(I don't remember if Exolon has something like this too.)

I saw yesterday part of the walkthrough in the youtube channel of rzx archive and I have to say that the game looks very playable and smooth, will try it soon. Have you ever considered releasing your best games in cassette via Cronosoft or Monument? It would be an interesting pack, I think ;)

One of the best AGD games ever!
    Thanks, Paul!

A very good game. I like graphics so much and playability.

    Thanks and congratulations.

I played a bit and looks fun to find out the machinegun pattern on every screen, also the pussy missiles are very irritating, good choice of the colour :-)
    I've come across this bug:

maybe a great excuse to fix it and while you're at it tuning the difficulty as you said

    I believe it does.

I was thinking the same thing when I was playing, but since there are a certain number of flying ships, I found I could predict when they're going to reappear on the right. Alternatively you can just shoot a lot when exiting the screen...

I think the last screen is pretty difficult as it stands.. Needed to resort to snapshots to finish the game, as I lost the rest of my lives within milliseconds the first time I got there..! :o

Oops, I'm an idiot - when I said Cybernoid further up in the thread I meant Exolon.

I don't know about 'safety' code but in Exolon I always felt the RHS appearances were unfair on the player, much better in KC3.

Nothing more to add other than great game!

Pretty one, Paul. I just have two slight observations to move - sometimes when Kyd dies part of his body are still visible, and having your score displayed somewhere would be nice.

Kyd Cadet (the series) is very cool!
I like the KC 1 than the KC 2, but I'll start playing the third. We'll see which one is best. :)
But KC 2 is good too!

Paul, thanks for the game! But why you can't fix the bug??? :(

I have a bug fixed version, but want to release it along with level 2 (additional 32 screens) that I am just finishing off.

Life gets in the way sometimes
