And what joystick interface you have ? Exist two types of joysticks (original grey sinclair joystick and other amiga/atari compatible joysticks).

If you have SINCLAIR INTERFACE 2(or clone) with two joystick connectors and slot for external rom cartridges, then you need original grey sinclair joystick of special adapter for use amiga joy.

All other interfaces use compatible pinout with amiga/atari/c64 joystick. Then you can connect any joystick from this computers. I use this sega joypad from Ebay:

Also is usable sega master system joypad/joystick/gamepad.

No, that's not quite right. Only the joystick ports on the side of the +2 and +3 machines have the unusual 'Sinclair-only' wiring, and they were put there when Amstrad took over production, not by Sinclair themselves.

By 'joy stick port' I presume you mean a joystick interface that plugs into the expansion port on the rear of the Spectrum? 48K machines didn't have any joystick ports of their own and needed an expansion interface.

The original Sinclair 'Interface II' takes standard Atari-type 9-pin joystick connectors, so any C64/Amiga/Atari joystick will do. the same goes for any 'Kempston' or 'Kempston-Compatible' joystick interface. But only one-button joysticks will work. Anything with more buttons, those extra buttons won't do anything.

Typical joysticks are the Quickshot 1 or Quickshot 2 (although those are older and may start to fail). Better to have something built with longer-lasting microswitches (that click when you move the stick) like the Quickshot 2 Turbo, Competition Pro or Cruzer joysticks. Though as Velesoft says, later designs of gamepad are good and reliable; it's just most of the buttons won't do anything. You can always crack them open and re-wire them though. A lot of people like to connect one of the buttons to the 'Up' switch, to double as a jump button in games.

Sorry, my bug. Only ZX128+2(grey model), ZX128+2A(black model) and ZX128+3(black model) contain own joystick ports with different pinout.

    About joypads:
Joypads contain internal logic that need GND and +5V for full functionality. Big part of old zx joystick interfaces contain incomplete or incorrect pinout. Often absent signal GND and same pin is used as +5V. Theoretically sega genesis joypad (6 buttons version on my previous photo) will work only on joystick interfaces with GND and +5V signals on correct pins (amiga compatible).

Hi in your photo I noticed a couple of things. Your joystick interface in made by Cheetah. It may be a Kempston or Sinclair one. I have a couple of spare Cheetah 125+ joysticks laying around. They still work well and have 2 plugs on their leads, 1 grey plug for use with Spectrum +2/+3, and a black plug which is wired for standard atari joystick ports, which is what that interface you have will use.

Also noticed in your pic that you don't have an original power supply for your Spectrum. I would advise you if it hasn't been done already, to check the voltage, ampage, and polarity are correct before you use it on your Spectrum, as if the polarity is incorrect it will damage your Speccy. I do have a good spare official Sinclair power supply here. If you interested in any, make me an offer/swap for em.

That's a Kempston compatible interface made by Cheetah.
Any standard 9-pin joystick will work, though any auto fire feature probably won't work.
