Ubuntu Gnome Help

I've been workng wih UBuntu Gnome increasingly in my work and on my home computers. So much so that when my company surplused a dual core laptop I wanted to install Ubuntu Gnome on it for my wife.

The computer came with 2gb of ram, and I installed a new 320gb hard drive. I was able to install Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 from the same DVD used recently on my office and home PCs.

However, on the laptop Ubuntu seemed to install correctly, it boots into the desktop environment. However, when I open large programs like Open Office Writer or Firefox the programs crash before they lanch.

It only seems to open programs if they are small, like a simple text editor or some of the settings based application.

My first thought was a ram fault. So I ran Ubuntu's ram checkig program that comes up with Grub, and it seemd to thing things were ok.

I dont think it's the HD in fault either because if it was we could not have got an install, plus it boots reliably enough,.

I have so far installed Ununtu three times with different settings on the mobo's disk options, and in the unubu set up (download updates whilst installing, and third party software). However, I always seem to get the same issue.

What could it be. I really don't want to fold and install Windows 7 on there.

Boot from the installation DVD and in the menu there should be an entry which will check the files on the DVD. If it finds an error download the installer and burn a new DVD.

If the DVD is fine I would then launch the programs that crash from a terminal to see if they spit out any errors.

If that doesn't offer any help install strace from the repos and in a terminal do the following:
    cd Desktop
    strace -o strace.log firefox

Replace firefox with the names of other programs you know crash. strace.log contains all the system calls and their return values.

    Read
    man strace

for very helpful info about options to the command and understanding the logfile.

I know the disk is fine. So far we have used it to set up my home PC, my work PC and the PC's of the two folkes either side of my office.

The laptop boots from the live CD, and runs the programs like open office from it without a hitch.

Running firefox from the command like gives a bus error.

I'm no Linux expert but it certainly sounds like a memory problem (or video driver)

I expect you've already thought of this, but is the 2GB of memory just in one SODIMM? If you've got 2 "sticks" take one out and see what happens

Might also be worth considering a different version of LINUX, just because if it's a driver problem you'll likely have different drivers/different driver versions. I don't think when you run off the Live CD it will use supplemental drivers (e.g. drivers for NVidia/Ati graphics), which might explain the lack of problems when you do that.

    I'm using PCLinuxOS and Mint.

Not used ubuntu in a while.....

Is it an AMD ir INTEL processor and are they 32 or 64 bit ?

Then check your install media to see if it is configured specifically for either options.

I've run into similar problems in the past when installing from magazine discs and it was usualy cause by being an incompatible version.

    Cheers
