No Man's Sky

  • I actually spent Sunday playing LEGO Worlds, with the Classic Space DLC loaded in. It's great to see the original 1979 Spaceships in there.

In it you land on various procedurally-generated worlds and try to earn rewards off the locals who set you tasks. Often the solution to those tasks are close by, but some simply don't get implemented, and you have to find another world in the same style where they have been added to get some of the items you need. As you progress more classes of worlds and tools are unlocked. And you can just free-build in the game.

The levels are just square maps but the level of detail is incredible. They're built out of bricks and slopes - like Minecraft but with many times the detail - and you can reshape and burrow into them in real-time, and it reconfigures blocks into slopes and plates around you.

No, is that a Spectrum game? Okay just checked it out, hmmm. I dunno if this computer is good enough - its old faithful the HP special edition running vista. I dunno if its man enough for the job. BTW how do you find out what your computer has, its specs in other words? I've often wondered where to look.

BTW I like the Adder the most of the ships portrayed although frankly I could design something more to my tastes than whats on offer. I think Dan Dare's old Anastasia would be a good starting point. Man I wish someone made a decent game of Dan Dare with all the trimmings but drawn like the original Eagle comic.

One of my beefs about No Mans Sky was the crappy looking space craft. Maybe I should go away from here and have a bash at designing my own space craft, havent done that in yonks.

    That's what makes it dangerous...

I've got a lot of love for Elite Dangerous too, although I've only recently started playing it (and as such am still flying a sidewinder with the most basic set up).
  • Is Elite Dangerous sh*t like the original as well? :p

I am still undecided. I have had it from launch and really want to like it and get in to it. But every time I try to play, it just seems too complicated. It feels like I need a science degree to play it! That's probably my failing though. It is amazing in VR with the HTC Vive though!
  • It took me a while to get to grips with (and there's still plenty I haven't worked out yet).

It would've been good if it'd come with a decent manual. Actually, what I would have liked would have been a manual, novella, large star chart, lenslok etc. just like the old big box games. I guess those days are gone...

no you mistakened it, it was me that was **** not the game

Blimey, is that STILL in development? IIRC it was Kickstarted around the same time as Elite Dangerous and that came out in 2014!

I was one of the funders of E:D. Played it for all of 1 hour. Is it finally supporting a 360 controller now without any keyboard controls? My setup is just too awkward for K+M play.

That isn't for a computer, its a sex aid mate.
    Sod it!

and that's the sound it makes when used as a joystick.

  • I really wanted to reply to that, but I just can't think up a witty reply.

  • I have been playing NMS again since the new 1.3 update - having not previously played it since April.

The game in it's current form is MUCH better than the early-access-for-full-price version released a year ago

One problem, however, was that the universe was "reset", so people's home base planets were COMPLETELY different after the 1.3 update. My base was on a lush green planet before the update. After the update it was floating about 100 feet in the air on a toxic volcanic shithole.

Apart from that it's actually mostly very good. No, really. 8/10

  • I agree. It is much better to play now. I hadn't played for maybe 4 or 5 months until the recent update. I think it warrants 7/10 now.

Insert joke about your own hometown here... unless your hometown really is a lush green place, full of dancing unicorns on rainbows etc.....

  • Looking back at the release version of NMS, it feels to me like it was a really really good tech demo of procedurally generated planets - with a bit of half arsed gameplay bolted on.

  • I've just downloaded the latest update and it was over 7gig in total. Installing the base game from disc was only around 4gig! It makes me wonder how much of the original game is left :))
  • I'm not surprised. The meat of the update isn't the gameplay mechanics (which have been hugely overhauled - space combat and planetary flight are really good fun now) but every texture has been upgraded and people are raving about the grass - which is really, really nice now. There's loads of small tweaks and upgrades.

And yeah, they should really have waited a year to release, but that's done and done now.
  • I remember SM saying the original code for the game engine was only 300 Meg, the other 1.5gig was music
