New Platform Game

Hello everyone, I'd just like to introduce myself and announce my first ever ZX Spectrum game, called CAP'N RESCUE which I uploaded to World of Spectrum less than 24 hours ago.

I'm 99% sure no-one will know me in these forums, as I owned and used my ZX Spectrum + 48k and it's near identical replacement from 1992 to 1996, when the other kids at school were going on about their Megadrives and SNESes. I didn't realise there was a retro scene until the press coverage of the 30th Anniversary in 2012.

I'm only just beginning to dabble in assembly language so, in the meantime I've used AGD 4.6.

The story is that you play a sea Captain, trapped inside the body of his pet monkey by an evil witch, and you have to find your human body, whilst recovering your treasure along the way.

    Welcome to WOS.

Super, looking forward to seeing what you've come up with.

Btw, could you also add a screenshot to your post please? ;)

    Look forward to the game.

    I can't see a link.

    Thanks

Welcome to WoS!! You will realice son that there is a huge retro community, and the Spectrum one is one of the biggest, with a quite active community and a large number of new games :)
I think it would be better to share your game somewhere else as the WoS upload, like the whole page, except the f?rums, is on hold, so you never know how long it will take until the game shows up here :)

    Enjoy here!

Welcome and congratulations on finishing your game.
The story is that you play a sea Captain, trapped inside the body of his pet monkey by an evil witch, and you have to find your human body, whilst recovering your treasure along the way.

Haha I love it already! It could be months (or more) before it becomes available on WoS so yep, as others have said - can we have an alternative link please?

If you don't have webspace there is always dropbox, google or the rubbish mediafire type ones.

Hi everybody, as requested I've opened up a dropbox account and the link to my new game CAP'N RESCUE is here https://www.dropbox.com/s/lq1promppzaavp1/CAPN%20RESCUE%2048k.zip?dl=0

The folder contains the game in .tap and .tzx format and there are some instructions.

Being a newbie, I'm not sure how to put a screenshot on here without hosting it on the web but, you're welcome to take your own.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

Thanks for this mate, it's a nice game, especially for your first game project!

To be honest though, I think a little more animation in the main character (especially the tail), and more colour in the screens, would make the game more atmospheric. But a lot of fun, and I look forward to seeing what else you give us (and welcome to WOS, by the way!).

    poor graphics

Hey, they aren't that bad, especially for the 1st game. Absolutely acceptable :)

    Cool.
I would make more lives 'though.
So I wait for the crack, hehehe.

Great 50hz moving sprites. That's good. Decent control, also good.
As others have said, graphics could be better, but it's difficult for a single person to do it all.

But again, it's great achievement and it plays well. :-)

Hello again, thanks everybody for the nice comments - and I'll take onboard the criticisms as well.

I'm not 100% happy with the black ink on blue paper myself, it probably wasn't the best choice. I'm going to try an solve that in the ULA+ version.

Jerri, I can't make you like the graphics but I'm not sure what you mean by wrong .tzx? I'm having no problems using it in ZX Spin 0.7 in 48k PAL mode, and I've tested the .tap in Spectaculator on an Android phone.

if you look at the tzx file it says direct recording not the usual basic loader, screen and game even though they are there

An excellent first game, congratulations !!

I think he was being sarcastic. Its get ace graphics.

Fun little game, a nice distraction.

If the colours aren't to your taste, try playing it on a ULA+ emulator as the background is a little more pale.

too big for standart loader - 1,5 Mb
and dont load with Unreal Speccy.

    about gfx
you use only 3 elements for screen construction.

first and tenth levels look the same.
maybe I'm spoiled by modern games
but I want different... like in Jet Set Willy

    Hello again everyone,
I'm going to treat this like a test, and remove the download of Cap'n Rescue for the time being. I'll change the colours, and perhaps redesign the levels.

Jerri, the loader was created on save out from AGD v4.6. I don't really know how it works but there is the option to save without a loader so, I'll do that with the new version of the game and make a loader from within the Sinclair BASIC editor instead.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, which hopefully will lead to me making a better game.

Thanks for the compliment thehive, I hope you didn't find my pun at the end of the game too cheesy.

Jerri, I won't throw out the game but I will improve it and release a better version, there were a few ideas I had that I didn't include in this version so, I'll try and put them in - I've got three and a half kilobytes of free RAM to put them in.

Yerzmyey, I was toying with the idea of putting a selectable number of lives
at the beginning of the game, I'm going to have a go at including that - there are also extra lives to discover in various areas around the map. By the way, your music in More Tea, Vicar is awesome! :)

    Try poking 32028,x = lives

Yerz, I poked the tap and tzx with the above value and it worked on both counts. We may have a different version. Is anyone else having probs with this poke?

    RetroPhase2014: Thanks a lot. :)

ANDREW RYALS: Hmm. So I don't know. I was using the version with 3 lives.

    Where to watch the game?
    The link doesn't work..

    Hello again everyone,
I've redone the graphics for CAP'N RESCUE and made a few small changes to the screens.

The .tzx is a direct recording, my intention being that the sound should be able to be put on a tape or played into a Spectrum some other way. This isn't something I've been able to try myself.

Both the .tzx and .tap load into ZX Spin 0.7q just fine.

The new link for the improved game is on dropbox:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/a7aub3hx46eut6c/CAPN%20RESCUE%20v1-1.zip?dl=0

I hope you like it :)

    Additional 20/11/2014 @ 20:08hrs
I've noticed Android doesn't like the CAP'N RESCUE zip folder - it's working okay in Windows.

I've made some improvements - animating the tail doesn't give very good results - it looks a bit like something else that I don't want to mention. :o
