Pokemon zx

Ok, perhaps a name change to prevent nintendo coming down on you like a ton of bricks, but i think a pokemon game would work well on the spectum. Map wouldnt have to be massive..shouldnt be too hard to implement..should it? :)

And how Pokemon games exactly work?

You know, not all of us followed kid video games from late 90s ;)

From what I have seen on Youtube there are some duels between these Pokemons which you control by...choosing options in text menus like here:

    You mean such stuff?

    Yes, thats the one :)

As much as it is aimed at kids, the rpg element is quite addictive as is leveling up your pokemon.

I really like this idea. Surely it's possible, the original was on a gameboy, wasn't that a z80 cpu? Can't remember.

I love the Pokemon games. I think they're really good. They may be aimed at kids but they can get pretty deep if you want to take the time. They are also very well polished and paced with strong stories and a rich mythology and a well balanced combat system. Nintendo have been doing this for a very long time and it shows.

The thing is.. it's not technically difficult to do this type of game on the Speccy but the story, combat, range of characters and, hardest of all, balancing the whole lot to make it a good game *are* very hard to get right.

I too had no idea how Pokemon games played, as I was an 80's kid not a 90's kid, but having watched "Twitch plays Pokemon"* this year, now I know, and yes, I would say the Speccy is, at the very least, capable of hosting the first Pokemon game.

*The first Pokemon game was "played" by the chat room on Twitch, meaning everyone viewing the channel (which went into the millions) had the opportunity to enter commands. Chaos ensued. And it took weeks. But against the odds, they managed to complete the game. The culture that grew around it was intriguing; a cult formed praising the ability to vote on commands to make it through mazes safely ("Democracy"), while another cult formed decrying the voting system and opting for chaos("Anarchy"). Other cults formed around objects found in the game, and specific Pokemon that had obtuse names thanks to the boards inability to type properly. It was incredible to watch.

Pokemon is just another JRPG and it is just as easy/hard as every other kind of JRPGs to be put on the Speccy.

I've played Pokemon so long now so I know a lot about it. Well, JRPGs are notorious of its size and this is a huge game.

I wouldn't do it myself on the PC, let alone on the Spectrum. But if anyone wants to do it, be my guest. (Also the fact that it's on New Game Ideas usually means I won't do it. :))

    Good luck with it! :)

The concept of "the original console uses a z80, so it should be possible on the speccy " is, generally, wrong. Computers and consoles are much more than just a cpu. For example, a humble gameboy has a graphics processor with tiled backgrounds, hardware sprites and scrolling, plus instant access to 4 megabytes of rom. Even with such specs, the original game had to rely on software scaling (using big pixels) to be able to fit all 150 pokemon graphics in the cartridge.

Sure the game dynamics are simple, but you would need a fact storage m?dium to make this game possible on the speccy.

Plus debugging a jrpg with 150 different playable characters is what i would call a nightmare.

Lol. I knew someone was going to pull me up on that z80 remark.

I wonder if a simpler version of the game is more possible, with a smaller map, less pokeamon and a smaller story. I guess getting the game ballenced is the hardest thing. The Game is basically top trumps with a map to walk around :D

But on ZX we have big SD/IDE medium with possibility fast load data. Then number of sprites and space for graphic is unlimited. On DIVIDE/DIVMMC interface run system ESXDOS with FAT16/FAT32... Game not use fast scrolling effects or too much sprites on screen. Some animations can be loaded as prepared zx screens from ide (in real time - 25fps fullscreen). Or can be used in esxdos loading from TRD images with size up to 1MB and up to 4 virtual fdd drives = up to 4MB for data.
