    how was the spectrum not released in australia?

    they had to make do with blocky pixels and pastel colors

    I don't think that is right, I definitely saw them in a few shops here in Sydney and there were user groups, Melbourne house books in the stores etc. I also saw some Amstrads in stores later on too. The C64 did absolutely dominate though.
