Grim Fandango Remastered

edited January 2015 in Chit chat
Was released yesterday on Steam for those so inclined. Probably the best story ever in a video game bar The Last Of Us.

It also has my favourite funny lines in a video game:

Manny: {to the balloon twister} Some festival, eh?
Balloon twister: Yeah, yeah. Pretty busy. my carpal tunnel syndrome is really acting up.
Manny: But you don't have any... tendons...
Balloon twister: Yeah, well you don't have a tongue but that doesn't seem to shut you up, now does it?

I have such an enormous amount of love for all of these Lucasart games (i.e. Scumm and similar). I never played Grim Fandango through becuase it kept crashing my Frakenstein of a 486 at the time. I'm going to go home and get this now.

They were a bit like the Pixar of their day. Always very high quality, often very origianal and suitable for kids as well as adults

My personal favourite was always Full throttle, the puzzles were brilliantly pitched in terms of difficulty and it was so very funny. Not a huge amount of well judged humour in games these days.

I used to love many Lucasarts adventures but somehow never could find motivation to try Grim Fandango.

I just didn't like the idea of playing a dead guy with a big square skull instead of a head in a world where everybody is dead and has a big square skull instead of head. It was kind of repulsive.

I read many times that it has a good story so hmm..., maybe one day I'll give it a chance.

Should be if it's on GOG. Think they all are.

I only heard of this (original) game through GOG's promotion of the remastered version. I thought the preview trailer looked OK. I was surprised when I saw how highly the game was universally rated.

I'm not particularly into remastered games (no real surprise if I'm posting on WoS I guess). Part of me wonders whether I might be better off trying to play the original..?

Not really. The original game is in there so you can just peel off the modern shine it's been given and play as originally intended if you wish (including using the original tank controls!). Much easier than tracking down & trying to get the original working on a modern system.

pretty sure the original is included on the gog version anyway

Fair enough, I originally didn't really want to fork out a tenner for it but it might be worth a punt as it seems to be pretty highly rated.

I still have my original disks but I'll probably get this anyway as it's all just a darn sight easier through Steam.

It is one of the best, I struggle to say point+click because it's not really, adventure games of all time but it is fearsomely difficult in places. It's one of the few games from the 90's, particularly 3D ones, that looks remarkably good even today without the HD upgrade. Like those 2D PSX and Saturn games which still look smart even though the 3D stuff looks a bit naff nowadays.

And it is one of the very few videogames that is genuinely funny.

Looking forward getting this one, I have always wanted but for one reason or another I have never played it before.

Note that this game is also on the Humbe Bundle store. It's at a intermediate price between GoG and Steam, but you'll get both a non-DRM version and a Steam key.
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!
