Cthullu influences in speccy games

edited February 2015 in Games
Following from the Pagan thread, are there any games influenced from the warped mind of HP Lovecraft? Everyone's favourite elder god Cthullu is all over the internet, but he doesn't seem to have made it onto the Spectrum I think.

(Maybe because the Euro hadn't yet been minted, so no Cthullu smileys yet.

:?

)

Or am I wrong?

    The Shadow Warriors over Innsmouth
Thing on a Spring on the Doorstep
Shadow of the Beast sounds like it should be a Lovecraftian title; they're usually a variation of "x of the y" (Haunter of the Dark, Shadow out of Time, Whisperer in the Darkness, Colour out of Space, etc).

Seriously though, haven't been able to find anything, even had a look through the text adventures and there's nothing, remarkably. Shadow over Innsmouth would easily make a good text adventure. There's a brilliant Xbox game called Call of Cthulhu and the first half of the game is basically Shadow over Innsmouth, escaping from the hotel and being chased through the town by it's inhabitants.

Does the protagonist wear a Miskatonic University jumper? If not I would be unimpressed :D

Nice find, but damn it, all the text adventures are in Spanish. :(

The Price of Magik is in English and it's pretty good.

Curious to see very few titles for Spectrum based on Lovecraft universe.

Later in the 90s we found many interesting PC-game adventures based on it: the Alone in the Dark trilogy, Shadow of the Comet, and others I don't remember their names now.

But is it really inspired by Cthulu? I don't see any mention of it or any element of horror in any of the reviews. Haven't played the game myself though.

    Found this in the archive:
    ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/disks-inform/Anchorhead-AnInteractiveTaleOfLovercraftianHorror.dsk.zip

Not sure exactly what it is, can't find a corresponding page that details it and I've left my tablet in the car so I can't try it out right now.

It's a shame The Smirking Horror didn't make it out.

Zenobi covered a lot of bases, are none of their games Lovecraftian? I did buy the disks from Balrog, but I've still not played more than a handful of them.

There was a JSW remake called a Lovecraftian Willy, or Willy and the Cthullu Mythos or something like that years ago, but it was never finished.

The guy working on it just vanished as well, shame he had some nice looking sprites drawn for it, probably would've been quite fun.

Tsk. He probably invoked the name of The Great One too often. Did he not know?

The Price of Magik, if I remember rightly, had a sanity system which was almost certainly inspired by the Call of Cthulhu RPG.

Thats a good list. The Price Of Magik has a sanity system in it. You have to be slightly insane before you can cast some of the spells. Most of the game is set in a large house which isn't exactly haunted, but does have a grandfather clock which chimes out the hours noisily. However the final baddy to be killed is a wizard rather than a slumbering Ancient One.

I was excited to find in the list The Mystery Of Arkham Manor, which appears to be a sort of sequel to Redhawk. I wasn't aware of that. Annoyingly its a prohibited distribution.

Ohohohoho....now THAT is interesting. Nintendo, when they released the Lovecraft-themed Gamecube game "Eternal Darkness", patented the sanity meter in the game, meaning nobody else could use that feature in a video game. If someone has used it beforehand...

It's definitely inspired by Cthulhu, Level 9 mentioned as much in an interview here:

    http://spectrum-zx.chat.ru/level9.htm

Still, much like Red Moon is obviously based upon The Magic Goes Away by Larry Niven, they're quite careful to avoid anything that might constitute a copyright infringement.
  • NECROPOST! (But not as bad as they usually are)
I'm currently working on a wee game based on Lovecraft's "In the Walls of Eryx". Got the gameplay mechanics working, just need to make a load of maps and tart it up with some nice graphics.
  • You going to post any tantalising screen shots then?
    Sausages is more important
  • The graphic adventure "Mystery of Akrham Manor" is lovecraftian, by the guys behind Redhawk/Kwah!.

Think the two Redhawk games were Redhawk and Say Kwah. Although Arkham Manor was from the same author. He's recently appeared on Facebook I think?
    No one important.
