PUYO - iOS touch game entirely inspired by ZX

edited March 2015 in Games
Hello guys,

Just wanted to share a game that I created on my free time, totally inspired by ZX Spectrum.

It's a simple match-3 game, with some minor twists. As you advance levels, you have less time to make a move. If you run out of time, besides losing a life, you also lose some points and, the board is completely scrambled. That makes exponentially more difficult to advance when you reach upper levels.

I'm actually a former MSX user, but huge fan of converted ZX games.

    Is this like bejewelled?

Also, out of interest, how long did it take you to write it, and what did you use?

Yep, but you can match any >=3 adjacent pieces.

    For example.

I used pure Objective C and Open GL ES routines! :)
It was the closest I could get to my Z80 ASM coding (for MSX)! :)

*PS* It's tough to calculate the amount of hours. I ended up creating a small set of libraries to abstract textures, audio samples, music, persistence and so on AND, I only code a few hours per week on my free time. I would say no more than 100 hours in total.

    BR,

Please download it! (I give you a free code, but you share it with someone else!!!)

    This game looks great but...

Pictures in your iTunes page here show you are selling a game that contains both Steve Cain's Cobra loading screen and PheeL's Stellar Contour gigascreen. Did you remember to get their approval before selling their work as part of your own?

Einar, thank you for pointing that out.
I'll fix that as soon as possible.
I have sent you a PM.

    Done!

Mark R. Jones was extremely kind and allowed me to use his artwork.
    Thanks Mark!

Can someone suggest me a nice & catchy new name for the game?

Perhaps "Match Countdown" or something similar?

That name seems perfectly suited for the gameplay. But I would worry about SEM and ASO. I have the impression that nowadays, its better to use a single low competition word. What you guys think about those below:
    Ekcle

    Rodrup

    Nocobot

    Lazap

    Skizze

    Tribop

    Goulbap

    Bopster

    Glowl

    Voov

Also, can we vote for the best icon:

Matchworks, Retromatch and Slideral are reasonable choices.

I vote on the first icon.

My wife voted for the last one! :)
My vote also goes for Matchwork, but, apparently it's just the two of us voting.

Matchwork makes sense and can be visible if one searchs for the word 'match' on the appstore. Slideral sounds cool and your wife wold be glad. Personally I would go for "Matcho"

I decided to use a new song as well.
by John Hassink (personal friend of mine): http://www.msx.org/wiki/John_Hassink

    Haha Mexican wrestling!!
There is already one Matcho on the appstore, maybe Matchobrit ?
You'd have to make it popular on twitter and facebook, there are tons of match 3 games. So why not use funny sprites like the mexican fighter but with a union jack mask, dunno something related with colours, flags and fighting moves.

What about asking someone else for two songs?
    1) During Gameplay
    2) Game Over

    What you guys would suggest?

*PS* The game is currently free @ the App store.

    Still missing some music.
Any suggestions? Someone knows someone who would give permission to use a nice calm ZX PSG tone?
