Peer to Peer Software Question

Are there any PC applications like Limewire or Emule that still work today? I need to know for my top secret genetic research.

  • Torrent client?  I regularly use uTorrent.
  • utorrent for torrents, is still vastly used (although earlier versions, theres apparently issues with later versions, dunno if theyve been ironed out now?)

  • I use utorrent quite a lot to download live gigs and have to say it's excellent, if I get enough seeds I can get download speeds of up to 15MB a second.

  • eMule is not so bad. Currently, it's full of fake servers (and fake files), but if you get a list of legit servers you can still use it. Keep in mind that most users have switched to torrent networks, so speeds are slow. On the other hand, it seems (at least in Spain) that eMule has converted into a "niche" network... if you want comics, ebooks or older movies, it's a good place to search.

Torrent networks are (now) the most used P2P networks. But uTorrent has evolved into a very crappy adware. Azureus (or Vuze) always has been a bloated program. I'd recommend qbittorrent, a lighter torrent client... or using an entirely disposable machine to download (i.e.: some NAS that have P2P clients or a Raspberry Pi).
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

Personally i would recommend against storing seeds in polythene bags, a simple brown paper bag would far more suitable preventing mould and other nasties developing.
