Immortal ZX games

Quite an interesting page here: http://zxds.raxoft.cz/games.html
A list of games which the author thinks are still genuinely playable today.

Any thoughts?

    Not a bad list.

Contains the majority of the usual suspects that everybody gushes over, but some of which are undeniably brilliant. There's a few oddball selections on there which are genuinely playable.

....and of course there are a few games which are almost painful to play, unless you have your rose tinted glasses on.

But I'll say the good on the list does far outweigh the bad.

I have no words... Really true ZX classics. Personally I do not like sport games, rally or text adventures, but besides this - all others everyone must play!
    Heavy on the disasm
  • An immoral game could be How To Be A Complete ****.
  • Yeah - a pretty good list I reckon... With a list that size there are always going to be a few that aren't to everyone's taste, but the more I scrolled down the more I was nodding my head, thinking 'yup'...
  • Aye, a good list. I seem to remember looking at it a while back.

Nice to see it by genre. Plenty on there I've never played.

No Avalon or Dragontorc? Whatcha talkin bout Willis? :(

It's a good list of games, though it could perhaps benefit from a bit of pruning for length. Right from the start, Head Over Heels is awesome, and, dare I say it, the definitive version. But it just highlights the off-putting slowdown you come across in Knight Lore and Alien 8.

For modern playability quite a few are surpassed by versions on other platforms. I'm thinking of the 16-bit versions of Nebulus, Carrier Command, Lemmings etc. and easily emulated arcade games like R-Type and Rodland. There's even a few on there with obvious lazy conversions of C64 graphics.

  • If as 'inmortal' we mean 'still payable today', the list is ok, it includes the best games in any genre.

If I had to include any more games, they would be F. Martin Basket Master, Abu Simbel, Fred or Maziacs.

I thought a similar thing, some games were just better on other platforms, especially arcade conversions, and are a matter of curiosity rather than examples of gaming immortality, especially if you are trying to pique the interest of someone who has little to no history with the Spectrum.

  • There's a few speccy games i used to love but simply cannot play anymore. Roy of the rovers springs to mind.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • There's some great games on that list nice to see people promoting these classic games today. It is what I always try to do :)
  • Quatrazon is one of my favourite games ever. Now though, because of the appalling scrolling, I just can't play it anymore.
