Bluetooth ZX Spectrum - I may be alone, but I love it!

Playing Hungry Horace on a big telly with this on my lap made me feel like a teen again! Happy happy days!

Anyone else feel the love for it?

  • Composite modding a real speccy produces the same effect but for much cheaper ;)
  • But only if you know what composite modding means and how to do it! My Bluetooth was 50 quid and seems decent but I take your point x
  • You don't really need to composite mod the Speccy.
Using a period TV is half the nostalgia.
  • £50? From where? If you don't mind me asking?!

A composite modification means to change the video output from an original ZX Spectrum to send 'composite' video signal which can be more appropriate for modern televisions, and can produce a clearer picture than the original output. This involves opening up the computer and making some changes. As a result you would no longer use an 'old style' RF lead out of the Spectrum into the 'aerial in' RF input of the TV but instead a lead with phono connectors to plug into the yellow coloured input on the television. Or SCART input.

However, using a ZX Spectrum in original unmodified state can still be very decent. ( if it has been checked for problems and parts replaced if necessary). I use my Spectrum unmodified on 2 modern TVs to the RF in, and have no problems.

Is that the new Recreated Spectrum thingy?

At the risk of slight thread drift, I have a rather vague memory of reading somewhere that the Speccy outputs comp video to the edge connector. Is that correct? If so, it would be dead easy to rustle up a quick connector to make use of it, without having to perform surgery on the internal modulator.

  • Later issue Spectrums do have composite video on the edge-connector. Some early issue 1 and issue 2 boards (IIRC) may need a short link wire soldering in.

Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb!
Looking forward to summer in Somerset later in the year :)
  • I could be wrong, but dosen't the composite signal at the edge connector suffer with noise/poor video quality?

  • Looks as if some of the original backers aren't very happy...
  • Well many of us did warn against buying into this Kickstarter campaign right from the get go. Looks like some people chose to ignore it and put their faith in Mr Wilcox. For their sake, I hope it's sorted out sooner rather than later.
  • It's such a shame because, on paper, it seems like a modern authorised Spectrum replica product would be a brilliant thing.

I don't believe that Steve went into this deliberately planning to deceive people (whether about product functionality, royalties or special edition cases) but there's no denying this has been a sequence of spectacular f*ck-ups! #-o
