With a YouView box/TV, all the free-to-air on demand TV services (BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD etc) are available without a contract, other than the need for broadband. You only need a BT / TalkTalk contract for extra 'premium' channels: eg. BT Sport, Sky Sports, Fox, Gold, SyFy etc.
Ew, I wouldn't let something running software written by a TV manufacturer within 100 feet of my network :p
No need to worry, the initial development of YouView was overseen by Alan Sugar, so you can rely on his excellent software development skills and rigorous compliance testing. ;-)
It's more the operating system on the TV that concerns me. I don't hear many people saying "gosh, this television's software is implemented really competently!" or "Wow, my tv manufacturer did a really fast turnaround on that bugfix!"
Same feeling when it comes to things like washing machines and microwave ovens etc. :)
A good case in point would be the clock on our oven/grill (which must be set before the elements will power on!) which goes 23:59... 24:00... 00:01... etc. *double facepalm* If they can't be trusted to code a freaking 24 hour clock just imagine the carnage when they are let loose on SSL certificates!

Developer: Sir Alan we are quite behind schedule due to a couple of bugs found on the embedded Java Card we run our OS on.

In a similar vein the makers of my Son's tablet computer was hacked today. The hackers stole profile information and are purported to have gained access via SQL injection, which is an old technique that any firm selling technology (kiddies stuff or otherwise) should have the sense to guard against. It does make we wonder if these devices could be easily compromised to gain access to our home network.
