Best Band Management Game

edited December 2015 in Games
For some reason I have a soft spot for games where you try to manage a pop group. What is your favourite? The ones I am aware of are
Rock Star Ate My Hamster
The Biz
Chart Topper
Star Maker

Rock Star is fun, but simplistic.

Chart Topper is just so sloooow.

I think my favourite is probably The Biz.

  • Oops. Can this be moved to Games please?
  • Done. You're not the 1st person to have done that!!!
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...
  • The poll doesn't seem to have survived the category move.

Rockstar is the only one I've played. I do like management games like these though.

I keep meaning to have a go at The Biz or Starmaker. Never heard of Chart Topper (checks archive - ah, it's a type-in).

I have chart topper for ZX80 and it takes about six months to complete a game!! Good fun though.

Tap file here for Speccy and O file for ZX80.

I know it's a ZX80 page but for some reason a tap file is included in the zip along with the O file.

  • I would have voted for "Rockstar". It's not the best game in the list (that would almost certainly be The Biz), but it's the one I grew up with and have the fondest memories of.

There was another one called It's Only Rock N' Roll, but I've not played that for more than a few minutes, so I can't really comment on it. Written by the the same guy who wrote The Wild Bunch, so I should probably give it a proper go at some point.
  • Rockstar easily! top 10 speccy game imo

did this appear in the 'updates' board instead? I guarantee I did not make my 'power drift' thread in updates when it had to be moved over here. I made it on this board. I think there is an issue....
  • The Biz was written by Chris Sievey, who also become known outside the speccy for his 'Frank Sidebottom' alter-ego.

The extra tracks on the cassette were actually the first recorded appearance of Frank, singing a cover version of the Freshies 'I can't get Bouncing Babies by the Teardrop Explodes'.

The game is now worth quite a bit, possibly due to that connection more than the game itself.

You guys should try 'Its Only Rock and Roll' for the following reasons:
    - It's made by K-Tel just like 70s compilation records
    - The lyric generator (preset lines randomly combined for amusing effect)
    - The 'live' performance (basic even for a speccy)
  • That's something that never really appeared on the PC, there was one from Mindscape but it wasn't very good.
I'd love to see a group management game on the PC, but NOT with silly cartoon graphics.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • Oh yes, "It's Only Rock And Roll". I liked that one too (though forgot about it for some reason.

    My Top 3 are therefore:
    1: The Biz
2: It's Only Rock And Roll
3: Rock Star Ate My Hamster

I also have "Rock Manager" (2002 PC Game). It's sort of ok, although it had Missions rather than an open-ended career. Once you complete the missions (Took me about a day), it's pointless with no replay value.

After playing The Biz on and off for 30 years, having loads of no. 1s and such, I finally got the Isle of Wight festival offered to me last year. I'd decided previously there must be a bug preventing it. There's a few bits in the source code that I think never happen.

Jumping out of the band game, F1 by CRL is worth a mention, I've made a 2014 version with updated car models. Of course they look awful. Also, the painfully addictive (but formulaic) Kairosoft games on ios/android.

Here is that awesome band performance (about 3 mins in):

    WHERE?!

I freakin' LOVE that game! My mate and I used to have all nighters trying to get through a couple of racing seasons when we were at school. In later years, when we were both on the dole, we would get a case of beer in and have DRUNKEN all-nighters on it.. And our heads just about exploded when we accidentally found out that you could press 'G' to gamble on the races (never had the original of it, so never saw the inlay card)

    Link Pls! :D

  • I'm partial to a bit of Star Maker. Simple and playable and lots of fun.
  • I love Rock Star which is simple but The Biz is my favourite, i think i had a few number 2's but never a number 1. I hate the random events such as Tax which seems to wipe out what you've earned.
It's odd though why you can never make an album, you can in Rock Star though.

  • For me it has to be its only rock and roll by k-tel. As kids we found it hilarious to give the band a rude name and then as you progress through the game see on screen Tony Blackburn likes (rude name).

I'll find somewhere to put it, I used the editor that's with F1 on its WoS page.

A tip in multiplayer F1, pick Lotus. It's the only team that will let you 'improve' to 100% in one go. The other teams stop just short, needing another 5k to be 100% on any of the attributes.

EDIT: Found it, I did the team names and colours but not the drivers.

Grunaki send me your mail in a PM and I can zip it up and send it over.

  • I'd love a game, made with enthusiasm....that encorprates all the best out of the 'media' management games that include software star et al....

One game that plays like The Biz but is all encompassing.
  • I still play The Biz to this day - i have a saved game that i keep playing.
It would be nice to see a PC game of the same style, but open ended rather than mission based.
