Nice hero!! It looks to me a robot in the form of mantis suffering lumbago due to lifting so many gifts.
A few suggestions just for fun, of course feel free to ignore them : )
    - Slippery ice are fun, you should use them more to design tricky ways of escaping and corner the player.
They suggest the idea of crackings appearing on the floor while you are walking. It could be fun to see them appear and would add some surprise and strategy as the crossable scenery would change. After passing over one of those crackings ice might break appearing impassable mini-lakes instead.
    - Make enemies trajectories change when they see you. For example, robots going up and down would would go towards you changing to left-right when they see you in open space. The idea is that they come to chase you when your x or y coordinate are the same and change from up-down to left-right behaviour according to your moves to dodge them. Again this could be good for tactics, variability, stealth using the scenery to hide yourself, etc I guess enemies would have to be a bit slower with this gameplay.
    - Trees are cool. Make them bigger and use them as a gameplay element. It could be fun that enemies were covered and out of sight when they pass behind trees.
    - I'd like to open the doors or get into the chimneys and peek inside :)
    - The assailant hipster is funny. You may want to make enemies talk. It'd be original for an AGD game. Dunno why but I'd like to talk to these hipsters and also try to cheat the faulty artificial intelligence of the snowmen.
    - When you are killed I would prefer you weren't spawned on a safe spot, I mean on a spot where you are saved from the fight to escape you were playing against

Your comments are funny and your suggestions are brilliant - it would be interesting to see how many I could implement before Christmas without giving myself a nervous breakdown.

    Hi,

Thanks for the game. I enjoyed it, my only comments would be:

Santa looks like the Monkey from the PG Tips advert with a gas tank on his back
It would be nice if something happened to the character when you got killed. He could perhaps fall through the ice, or be picked up by Christmas angels!
As hikoki says, it would be good if the enemies were a bit more intelligent.
It would be nice if the something happened with the houses, you could have extra screens in some of the house for instance?

Overall though I enjoyed playing it.

Well, Johnny Vegas was commenting on 'Christmas 8 out 10 Cats Does Countdown' that the "b***dy monkey's selling teabags without me now." so, you never know but, I don't remember hiring him.

I tried turning him to into an angel a few days ago but AGD seems to not like my efforts, and skips past them even with DELAY 100 commands inserted.

I could get that working, glad you enjoyed it! :)

Not familiar with that one. I'll have to try it out sometime.

Here's a rough-and-ready new version - I haven't a lot RAM left in the editor, but I have changed Santa's appearance, and added tracking abilities to the 'hipster' (he's actually Jack Frost, not a hipster at all!).
The colours might look a bit strange as I was messing around with ULA Plus and put it back to standard palette to upload here. It also has AY sound not beeper sounds at the moment. Dropbox download HERE

  • Thanks for this. I will give it a go later once I have helped Mrs J with the decorations!

I really liked the side view of the previous version, he looked really old and tired with stooped, rigid posture, with head, neck bent forward and the heavy sack of presents like punishing his arthritic joints. His way of walking was great and funny. It may have sufficed to work a bit on his face, sack and walking animation on the front/back view.
If you keep the old ailing man, you could place gin bottles as power-ups for him to drink and walk fast as hell for a while, you know like jetpac fuel cocktails. The quirky story about a mantis robot to do the job was not bad at all if you consider that Santa is already retired.

From the new Santa I like the swinging ball of the cap and the walking animations are more polished but less comic than the first one. Now the front side makes him look one of the three Magi, younger and with turban. Ha I 've just recalled my suggestion for a Christmas Renegade mod that I'd really like to play: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/post/quote/49646/Comment_806880

As for the pedo lumberjacks (please don't change them, I like them!) new movements, I rather had in mind something not random that the player could predict and make it change. Imagine the player making snowmen flip their pattern between up<->down / left<->right. They wouldn't change their current fixed pattern until they saw your coordinate.

Final version now available on my blog or on Dropbox.

I don't have the time or free RAM to add anymore to this - it is more than functional and even better now (in my own humble opinion) thanks to the feedback.

Merry Christmas and I hope you enjoy the game :)

  • Well done on the new version RetroPhase2014. I like the new Santa, and the intelligence of some of the baddies. Good Christmas fun. Thank you.

I just had a short go at it, and it plays pretty well. :)

Thanks for the nice comment. I wanted to keep tinkering with it as there's 3kb left in the editor but Christmas is getting closer and a relative has taken very ill.

I'm pleased with my ice, though-ho-ho!
