Manic Miner (slightly) Updated

1. The new loading screen I put together here has been used.

2. The code was again assembled using a modded 'real' speedlock loader for both its intended use (on a real machine) and for tape loading fanatics too. This is not intended as any form of 'protection' it is simply to cut down loading time from approx 3m15s to 2m30s. :) Only the game code is loaded rather than an emulator 'built' one as that would load all the memory which is not needed, in particular Spin's method of doing this would save the whole content resulting in a large zero byte gap.

3. The game code was based on the Software Projects release rather than the more common Bug-Byte one, the reason for this was simply as the Software Projects release was later so it made more sense to base it on the 'last' code as such.

4. The 'typewriter' cheat was removed. The Software Projects version was "typewriter" instead of "6031769"

5. To make the game a bit more initially friendly, Willy starts with seven lives instead of three however:

6. There is no bonus life awarded every 10,000 points any more.

7. Minor detail: The scrolling message was slowed down a fraction so its more readable.

8. Minor detail: The scrolling message was altered very slightly to correct a few concerns

  • It sounds great, but I'd question changes 4, 5, and 6. I mean, why remove the TYPEWRITER cheat, when someone might want to someday use it? It's not like you're creating a version of MM for a competition, and so would want to prevent cheating as much as possible.

Changes 5 and 6 don't seem needed either. Alright, so changing the number of lives from three to seven would please some beginners, but it does noticeably change the challenge from how it was back in 1983, and so it's not fair to do this without first asking the player, I think. And I've no idea why you've disabled the bonus lives, as that was a reward for the player that took a practical form.

It's just my opinion, of course, but I do think it would be better if you re-enabled the bonus lives, returned the number of lives to three, and added an option when the game was loaded, saying:

    Please select:

    1. Normal Game.

    2. You start with seven lives instead of three lives.

    3. Infinite Lives.

As that way you're letting the player decide.

Please don't be offended, I'm not trying to be contrary or anything, and it is just my opinion. It's just that me personally, whilst I love the new loading screen, and a faster loader is a nice bonus, I just don't think that changes 4, 5, and 6 are necessary.
