rip. also not a huge fan but I do love the scene he did in Extras, on the piano making up the song. edit - didn't see that was already posted...great scene. edit 2, ah its not the actual scene just him talking about it.
not sure that's entirely true, i.e. he suddenly made a DnB/jungle album, at the exact time that genre got really big... went a bit synth pop in the 80s... was definitely a musical magpie of sorts as fog said.
While i liked a few of his tracks i think the media and some people on Facebook have gone way over the top calling him a god and all kinds of ****. I mean really this was a guy who wrote music just like everyone else out there and he wrote good and bad like everyone else. I just think people should get a grip and just think of the favorite tracks and **** and be done with it. Although saying that once the funeral is over and done with all of those people will just forget and carry on with there boring lives until another person falls over and dies.
Bowie music has surrounded my life even though my parents had no Bowie albums. Even as a three year old I identified with his sound and particularly from 1980 onwards as he began to become a mainstream establishment figure.
I remember his music on the Jukebox of a Territorial Army social club of the late 70's and early 80s was a regular occurrence. His music was played often on the radio which was played twice, sometimes three times a day. His face particularly the shape of his mouth was burned in to my mind from a young age particularly because of his appearances on Top of the Pops (which was always on in our house).
The world without Bowie feels like there is something missing. The media made a big storm of it today. It makes me wonder what will happen when it is Maccas turn.
You think about the simple thing of anyone from say 20 to 60 knowing of him.. He has impacted in people's lives and will do long after. Someone on fb said bet most can't name 3 songs.. Double that easily for most folk.
It's not so much the singing its the rest of it also.. Rick wakeman was showing the chords from LOM .. And how they go way off route to what's expected.
He had to be a bit commercial as he had a big deal.. But he was about music not celebrity ,hence why his peers from many genres big him up in the past day.
I tore into someone who said that yesterday. Who gives a s*** if someone who's not familiar with much of his stuff decides to post a tribute? Someone might have only heard one Bowie song, but they might have fallen in love to that one song, they might have lost a loved one to that one song, they might have a certain special childhood memory attached to that one song.
On one hand, you have people who are like "I like loads of his stuff, you only like one song, so you're not entitled to mourn because you're not a proper fan", and then on the other hand you get people who are like "I don't get all the fuss, why can't people just get over it and stop posting it all over Facebook" becuase it's something/someone they're not into, but then probably p*** their pants when their favourite footballer leaves their favourite team or whatever (I had the latter on Facebook yesterday too).

Yeah, the Extras scene doesn't seem to be on YouTube. It used to be. He really was great in that. It's a good song too!

Totally agree with that. I don't know that much of his stuff (always meant to have a 'proper' listen but somehow have never got around to it) but that doesn't mean I didn't appreciate his contribution to music, the arts and lifein general. Some people just make a big impression on the world.

yeah agreed, its a really good song. found audio only clip..
in fact, are there any other bowie tunes/albums that sound the most like this song? wouldn't mind hearing more stuff in this style
I'll be the first to say I absolutely hated Bowies D n' B stuff, of course it was the late 90's and I was big into Jungle and D n' B back then. When I heard Little Wonder I nearly sh*t myself in disgust...
China Girl is pretty terrible as well, and that cover of Dancing in the street he did with Mick Jagger, god that made me cringe when it was new, and I was only a little kid back then I think?
I do pretty much like most of the stuff he did apart from the stuff I just complained about.

I think its a kind of interesting failure tbh. but yeah pretty sure no dnb or jungle djs were slipping it into their sets back then (could be wrong). it's basically a pop song with a jungle beat added not the other way around
Yeah once again read this while I was at work, almost as much of a WTF? moment as Lemmy :O
Given the tendency for famous people to die in threes and the fact that this potential trio seems to all be of a musical bent, were I Mick Jagger, I would be soiling my trousers.
I bet the Ebay sellers will be rubbing their hands together. And... there's no betting some stupid twonk(s) will be charging a fortune for some beaten up record that even a charity shop would not have taken this time last week, 'But it's Bowie!!??!'.
I remember the weekend after Michael Jackson died, there was a at a car boot sale guy selling Thriller for 150 pounds. Which he had the week before for 2 pounds. It seemed everyone that had a Jacksons or MJ record made sure it had pride of place in the box of records, or middle of the table and wanted unusually silly money for it. Lest you go near it.. gasp!! 'Don't touch the precious things of the pitch'.

you sure it hadn't been reduced to 1.50? :) ...seriously, I can't believe that is true !
not saying people don't cash in, I do remember when Kurt Cobain died the next weeks NME classified section was full of people flogging tickets for the forthcoming nirvana shows...

I don't understand that at all. Why would you waste money on something like that? Maybe I'm in the minority but I just don't get it?
The wife just spotted this thread title on my screen.
" Is David Bowie dead ? "
I wish I could keep my mind this unpolluted.
( Even she sounded a bit upset about it )

Yes, this old couple were known for their stubborn belligerence. I remember in 2006 they were selling this 15" Packard Bell flat screen, and bare in mind it was battered and bruised and the screen had scratches. They would not take less than .... 150 pounds. When I told them that you could get them new for 98 pounds, they got all uperty with hands on their hips swinging their guts about 'Bur its flat screen mate!, ferst one ere in this market,".
That MJ Album was there for weeks. I never asked its price again. I think it ended up getting rained on and prolly sold for a fiver to some mug.
I got to know alot of the regular 'characters' at the carboot sales of Cardiff because I supplemented my education selling things on Ebay I brought at them. For example: Speak and Spells, Comodes, BBC Micros, Spectrums, old consoles and handhelds, 80's Casio Keyboards and related paraphernalia.
the bowie game is currently free till the 22nd.. Omnikron, if you get it from square / enix.. think they give you a steam key *BUT* you have to register with em to get it. was gonna make a new thread, but figured, if you liked his stuff you'd see this.

just been listening to Low while out with the dog, tbh ive never been a massive fan, i enjoy the classics, but unlike some bands i havent heard all of his output and i couldnt tell you say good album tracks etc so some stuff has passed me by, although a lot of chatter on forums has opened my eyes...and ears to some other great stuff id never heard. so ive started going through it in parts, also enjoying his latest album, still yet to hear the "gong" bit at the end of one track a workmate reckons is on there tho lol

RIP!! First Lemmy, Bowie and now with Alan Rickman gone!! The last time I can remember celebs checking out in threes was 1994 when we lost Kurt Cobain, John Candy and Bill Hicks!!!
