I did enjoy watching Parkinson back in the 80s. Like nearly every talk show host he had a few train wreck interviews, but wouldn't have been as interesting if he hadn't asked a few probing questions. Sad to hear of his passing
I knew a guy from Chesterfield ,originally. He said when he was young, he asked Richard Whitley for an autograph at some appearance and Richard said he wanted 5p! .5P please Carol.
Never really liked Russell Harty that much. Aspel was ok. The main difference was he would keep a straight face mostly, wereas if a guest said something funny Parky was away with it.
Most of the other chat hosts were too busy trying to be funny or liking the sound of their own voice. The uniqueness of Parky was he listened to the whole story without too many interruptions. His only failing was sometimes falling into his old journo habits with questions. I failed when interviewing Helen Mirren the first time or Meg Ryan. But that was only a few times, the rest he shined as a host.
Wogan was a great show. He had Kenneth Williams as his back-up guest if someone didn't show up. The only time it failed was when that Sue Lawley took the **** out of Vivienne Westwood. Last laugh on her the stuck up bitch, as Westwood became an icon in fashion and Lawley just faded away into beige blandness.

You mean Kenneth Williams always had to be there in case he needed come on? Bloomin heck must have never been away from the BBC studios. I guess it was in the event someone cancelled a day or two before.

You might as well pull all the stops out and say Fred West :))

Yeah. forgot he did a chat show, all very light hearted if I recall. Almost seemed a bit rehearsed sometimes.

Can I add Carrie Fisher to that list?
