Recommendations for Amstrad CPC games.

I've never had any luck emulating Amstrad games before (GX4000 doesn't count :)) ), but it works brilliantly on my RetroPie set up, so what games would you recommend I try?

I've tried a couple of games I've always wanted to try on there like OutRun, Target Renegade and Rolling Thunder, but I'm kind of stuck for what else to try? Speccy games I liked are the obvious ones I'm going to try next. Like Feud for example :)

  • Yeah, but maybe refrain from posting there if it is about the Speccy, considering the number of Speccy-haters ... well, there's quite a few people on WOS who badmouth the CPC so fair enough I'd say ...
I check out the place every once in a while but I'm not inclined to make an account.

Prehistorik one and two are good. Also worth looking at cpcgamereviews.com click on the game title to download the game. WinApe is a good emulator which got updated last month.

Interesting machine the CPC. 16 colours on screen, no colour clashing but at a low resolution compared to the the speccy. Speccy ports look poor but a few games where developers take more time look really good. Locomotive Basic is also rather good as a language.

I find it rather fun (if that's the word) loading the same game on openMSX, WinApe, Vice and a Speccy emulator at the time. I spent a fortune building a custom PC with top of the i7 and Nvidia graphics and I run Speccy games on it!

PS. I have a positive view about the CPC wiki and the C64 one too. Community development and editing of the site. Could be a WoS solution or alternative going forward?

  • 'The Island of Dr. Destructo'. Much better programming and far more enjoyable than the Speccy version.

  • Dr Destructo, Prehistorik 2, Super Cauldron, Gryzor, Orion Prime, BB4CPC, R-Type 128K, Get Dexter are definitely all ones to check out on the CPC. As are many of the Ocean classics like Robocop, Batman The Movie and co which mostly play like more colourful versions of their speccy counterparts.

Oh and Head over Heels is worth checking out too, basically the speccy version with just a splash of extra colour.

I'm barely on WOS these days ewgf... I only came on tonight to see if anyone on here was sellign any of the last 18 Codemasters games I need to finish my Speccy collection.

Anyhow, my recommendations for CPC software

Dizzy (of course) since the original originated on the CPC
Turrican 2 - best to get a disc image transfered to real 3" disc as the real game goes for big bucks on eBay
Titus the Fox - Never released on the Speccy or C64 but am in for a real treat
    Magnetic Scrolls adventures
    Myth
BAT - graphic adventure by UBI Soft
    Batman 3D
    Head over Heels
    Megablasters - great Bomberman clone
Outrun Europa - the only decent Outrun game on the CPC
    Pinball Magic
    Turtles - The Coin-Op
    Rick Dangerous 2
    Shadow of the Beast

All I can think of right now..

  • Forgot about the R-Type remake.. Same with the Bubble Bobble remake

THe cart you mean is the C4CPC for the GX4000 and 464/6128 Plus machines.. I had one for my GX4000 but I had to sell it when I was raising funds for my father's funeral last year..
  • The R-Type remake (as mentioned above) looks incredible for an 8-bit machine.

  • Manic Miner, JSW and Harrier Attack were good on the CPC. I spent a lot of time on Dark Star too. WOTEF I remember being okay, but not as good as the Speccy version.

If it's a multicolor action game, it's quite likely better on the C64 tbh, but where the CPC positively shines is isometric games with color, Get Dexter & Inside Outing were amazing looking games at the time. Most other isometrics run as well as Spectrum but with extra color to help contrast - Bobby Bearing being a good example. Although certain color combos could spoil it a bit, unfortunately!

You could play "The Return of Traxtor" ;))

I'm not a CPC expert, but some games I like or I think they play nice are: Mega Blasters, Price of Persia, Rick Dangerous 1 & 2, Chase HQ, The Addams Family, The Sacred Armour of Antiriad, Ping Pong and Golden Axe.

Very different genres and there are probably more games worth playing, but that would be what I would recommend.

EDIT: The Return of Traxtor for CPC
