It'll probably turn out to be a good day in hindsight if you're a pro Scottish independence or for a in favour of a unified Ireland. No consolation for those of us stuck in the Kingdom of England though.
You know, in the last couple of days I kept wondering why there was no topic on this here on WOS, I guessed maybe the admins didn't want one since, as outlined in the forum rules, political discussions always turn sour. So I'm quite surprised there is a topic now ...
The next few weeks are certainly going to be "interesting", to say the least.
What a dumb result, let´s all go back to 1975. There will be less inmigrants going to the UK now, but there will be a lot of ex pats going back, only in spain there are almost 500.000 british people living there...
When I look at how much my money is now worth (10% less if I want to buy from abroad) compared to the investments (share ISAs and my pension) that I have (also fallen with a large bump), I think I will think very carefully before buying anything but essential items.
How many others will do the same? Oh dear, and we have not really left the last recession :(
All this, just because some people did not like the fact that they could not understand friendly people who speak another language.
The so called English are a mongrel race, very nearly everyone has some DNA from Europe or elsewhere in the world. So we are all immigrants.

Looking forward to summer in Somerset later in the year :)

Mods please close this thread as it WILL get ugly and I already see 'sniping' in other chit-chat threads that could end up with the whole chit-chat section closed as the mods will have a lot of work on their hands.
Well, in the short term this sucks.. Went to get a laptop for my Son the other day as his Grandparents gave him some money for his birthday.
Found a decent one on sale, and they had a former display model as well so even better discount. However, they had no adapter for it and none of the generic ones they had worked. Said they would order it in for us. Pay on collection.
Supposed to pick it up either tomorrow or next week.. The money my folks gave him for it is in Pounds. Looks like I'm going to have to stick that on a card or something until it bounces back. :(

Where is the other sniping? I think things have been fine lately, if a little quiet.

There wasn't a discussion because no-one started one, we certainly didn't ban/delete any referendum threads.
I agree with guesser, let's see what happens when those in favour of Leave start posting rather than just those pi$$ed that Remain lost. I've despised this entire thing, both sides are absolutely convinced of their righteousness.
I'm quite happy for for a sensible discussion on the referendum to continue, everyone has an opinion and should be allowed to express it.
As long as no-one starts getting personal and name-calling then all will be good.
We can always just ban the offenders instead of closing the thread.
Think I'll move to Scotland and join the EU in a few years.
I don't think it'll be any better fun up here, dude. This place is on its knees as it is and I'm failing to see how this development is going to help matters any. My dad told me he was voting for 'Leave' a wee while ago and the daft old ****'s got his wish.
I'm spaniard, so I'm not as involved as other forum members (but keep un mind that tolls and immigration consequences will affect other EU countries).
I won't talk about advantages/disadvantages, but... don't you think that 51% is a narrow margin? I don't know how things are in UK, but in Spain there are a lot of people that don't vote. So, at least here, 51% may not be the people will.
I guess that in this cases with such a big changes, there should be a clear result (i.e: more than 60%) or go into a second (and last) poll to validate the result.
The idea is that 60% or 2/3 shows a clear result. If that 1% difference is caused by people staying home (instead of voting), the first poll may act as a heads up and the second should get that people voting.
BTW I don't think that other states really want to abandon EU, but they want (and de serve) to re-negotiate their status. EU seems to be all about Germany, and that can't be good.

I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!
A common joke here is that...you can always call Alexis Tsipras who can turn your No into Yes (before you can say "Jetpac")
Is that because the Greek for Yes is "Ne"?
Nice thought (!!!) but no :)
It is because in our referendum we voted against staying in EU (actually against EU austerity and memorandums) and Tsipras somehow magically turned that into staying in EU and accepting austerity (turbo charged!)

That was exactly my thought! I even did search on 'Brexit' and found out that there is discussion about the name itself, personally I would rather call it 'Breakout'.
Probably there will be a wave of referendums, some countries will stay, the others will leave.
My own country (Poland) will probably hide the referendum from their citizens - they have done it quite recently - no one knew there was the referendum (some government rules) until it ended - the papers hid it somewhere between obituaries and dog food advertisement.

Ah - katalaveno tora! :)
(was in Corfu a couple of weeks ago and trying - sometimes successfully - to speak Greek)

It's not 1% but 4% of the difference, 17,410.000 people voted to leave, it was 1.3 million more than for the stay.
With such a large turnout, the result is quite legitimate and valid.
Otherwise, I agree that the impact of this referendum will be strong in many European countries, especially in Spain because the Catalan independence movement will be even stronger.
I think this is a good decision for the UK, as it will to determine their own destiny, without affecting the Brussels bureaucracy.
The fate of the EU, now mostly depends on the relations between France and Germany, because if France also leave the Union, it will cease to exist.
Time will tell if Cameron is Canadator or rather Balcanator/Referendumator/Groenladianator. I declare the poll illegal because the only motivation was save his own arse

There was 70% turnout which is WAY higher usual for a British election. There a lot of people here in the UK that don't vote, either though feelings of disenfranchisement by mainstream parties or though failure to register to vote. Also there was no conditions on the vote having to reach a certain percentage to stand.
Today the UK's smart-money is rapidly moving their economic interests into the following:
- Gold
- Diamonds
- US Dollars
Then proceeding shortly thereafter onto heavy investment in these commodities:
- Tinned foods
- Bottled water
- Candles
- Antibiotics / pharmaceuticals
- Fuel
- Shotguns
- Crossbows
- Clubs, knives, and other stabbing weapons
- Leather clothing (particularly trousers with the arse cut-out)
- Studded codpieces
- Mowhawks / hairspray
- Black V8 Interceptors
- Tin openers
- Any other barterable items
I'll be honest and hold up my hand and say I voted out.
But i really don't like how we actually got into this situation in the first place, and I lay equal blame on the EU and UK politicians for failing to see this coming and adjust their stances and institutions accordingly.
On the plus side I believe this will send such a shock through the political establishment of the EU that they will finally be forced to implement reforms and become more transparrent ( I mean, i only found out today that the EU had four seperate presidents ffs ), which will be good for those that remain.
It's a sad day, but it is what it is and we just have to get on with it.

Not sure if this is a good decision in the long run.

Fixed that for you :)

It can be closed if or when that happens then. I can tell you for nothing that moderators closing threads arbitrarily will get very ugly indeed.

I guess we're going to find out just how 'great' britain is. Think I'll move to Scotland and join the EU in a few years.
