Anybody got a Smartwatch?

I'm thinking of getting smartwatch for my birthday, but, having looked on the 'tinterweb it's a veritable minefield. I'd like one that'll synch with my iPhone 6, Strava and other odd's n sods. I've looked at the iWatch that one of my mates has and, to be honest, I can't see why it's any better than say a Pebble Time or one of many other smartwatches.

If anybody has any advice it'd be greatly appreciated.

  • People still wear watches?
  • Of course. How else would I know that we are 188 days through the year...

Why would they not wear a watch?

Several reasons I can think of, such as pretty much everyone having a smartphone with the time on it making a watch obsolete.

  • Spend the money on a smart phone rather than a smart watch..the phone is far more useful ;)
  • I find it hard enough to read on my smartphone, I would have no chance with a smartwatch.
  • MY watch isn't smart, it just tells the time and is cheaper than a phone...

  • My wife has one, and she swears by it, personally I think they're faddy, crap, and pretty annoying.

Everything she's tried to tell me about it that's a positive basically sounds like one more small annoyance that my life does not need at all.

1 small example, which may be useful for some but would eventually get annoying for me, the watch goes off when your phone rings. It either rings or vibrates, and obviously since it's a watch if you use it to answer when you're away from your phone it's on Speakerphone, which due to the size of it is tinny and inaudible anyway, and any people in the vicinity can hear your conversation. But like I said the sound is crap so you pretty much have to walk to where your phone is sitting and answer it anyway. If I'm away from my mobile there's a good reason for it, and when I come back I'd rather just pick it up look at it and be like Oh OK text, or missed call from "such & such", I'll give em' a call back, or nope can't be bothered with that git today....etc.

That is 1 of the small problems I have with that watches features....

I also don't want to be reminded every 35 minutes that I've not burned enough calories that day, and that I'm a lazy sod....

Nope! I literally wear a nice silver watch I was given for my 18th Birthday, or another one my wife gave me, if I go to a party, or wedding, or something like that. Guess what that watch does? It tells the time, like it's supposed to, and guess what it also does? It annoys me while I'm wearing it.

Bottom line is I find smart watches to be another horrible little gadget that should all be living under the Nevada Desert 2 doors down from the Atari E.T.

Now if they came out with one that said "You've not drunk enough beer today and haven't had a nap either" every 35 mins I'd think about getting one

  • I don't need a smart watch to get my naps disturbed everything 35 minutes or so, infact it literally happened this morning!

I'm half asleep as it were nicely snoozing in my chair, and I hear a bit of a commotion, hear the wife yelling at somebody, I hear my door slam. I wake up annoyed say what's going on? She says you need to empty the bins.

What really annoys me is the reason is it's going to rain today, the bins don't get picked up til' 10:00am tomorrow morning. I put the sodding things aout at about 8:30am THIS morning.

OK IT'S GOING TO RAIN! TODAY! LET ME JUST GO AND PUT THE F**KING BINS OUT 25.5 HOURS EARLY THEN!!!!!

    I don't, for some years now ...

Smart watches, almost convinced me to get one again, but the watch form factor is not very friendly for a screen due to limited size (wrist size).

  • I have to admit to being quite ignorant of smart watches. What do they do that a smart phone doesnt?

Empty your wallet and then annoy you.

In about three years, you may find that some features of the latest operating version are not available, the battery will not last very long compared to when it was new...

  • My watch is a nice reliable Timex.

At least there's a Sinclair reference there

For over two years I have had a Samsung Galaxy Watch. It was a neat little gadget especially its ability to record video at 720p.

However, other than telling the time and taking videos or photos on the wrist it was not much use to me for anything else. You could kind of answer the phone with it and talk hands free but it was not a comfortable or great experience.

It was good for taking on Roller Coasters and videoing the ride. I did that at Dollywood (Dolly Parton's own theme park).

Really in essence it was just a smart phone whos software was limited and screen was too small. I rarely use it now, it stays in the box.

  • Does Dolly Parton have her own theme park??? :))
  • She did :Dollywood

Not sure if it's still going

  • Classic gen 1 pebble - cos it's the speccy equivalent of a smart watch (IMO).
  • I'm looking to use it whilst I'm on a bike ride. It's a bit of pain to keep stopping on a 50 mile ride to get my phone out of my pocket every time I miss a call or email. I just think it'd be easier to just look at my wrist and then ignore the work related call :-)

I expect that would have been good for a ride bitd, but past its prime now if it's going to maintain its theme.
  • Why do you want to take phone calls while riding through the lovely countryside? :-O [-( :-?
