Forums invisible while not logged in

  • Glad someone mentioned this, I thought it was just me..!
  • Nope, i've noticed it as well. I thought it was down while Lee was doing something with it.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • I have noticed I can't log into WOS when my computer is switched off, also I can't log in while I am asleep, is this a known problem and will it be fixed ?
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........
  • Worth putting a message on the main site?

It was only chance I tried logging in, I assumed the forum was broken..
  • Yes, why? :-/
  • I assume it's to try and reduce people posting comments on Twitter. An official announcement would be useful though.
  • If this is a deliberate change, way to kill the forums! If there's something in a particular thread that we don't want guests to look at - can't that thread be flagged as "members only"
  • If this is a deliberate change, way to kill the forums!

I also see it this way.

In order to chase off some Nick and some George the site is blocked for hundreds of lurkers that visited it each day but never bothered to log in. I believe it's called throwing the baby out with bathwater :)

Everybody of us does lurking on many sites, right? And in most cases you wouldn't bother to make an account, you'd just leave.
  • It's a relatively simply process to sign up and sign in ralfy boy, if people choose not to visit the forums because they can't be bothered signing in chances are they are not contributing a whole lot to the site anyway.

The forums aren't really the important part of WOS...the rest of the content is which people can still access.
  • Lee really ought to put some sort of notice up about having to log in before you can view the forums and also give his reasons behind this totally illogical decision as well. I can make assumptions about why he's done this but I'd rather he explain the reason(s) himself.

I'm not a fan of the walled garden approach that various Spec Facebook groups use and I just assumed WOS was down again until I read a certain person's tweet about the subject. I doubt Lee will post anything about why the forums are now hidden away as communicating effectively with the masses is not one of his strong points. Sorry, but this is just a fact. I'm not trying to attack Lee but his track record in this area isn't good.

I'm not on anyone's "side" over all the WOS / Vega Plus crap and don't want to get involved in any individuals' squabbles but I am able to form my own opinions based on what does or doesn't happen and I'm still yet to see anything that makes me think the site is ever going to improve. I also happen to think that the Vega Plus is not going to come out on time, and if and when it does finally appear it will probably not resemble what most people think they've backed. But hey, that's just my own opinion.

Moreover, if a forum member had less than 3,000 posts in this forum, chances are they are not contributing a whole lot to the site anyway. Let's get rid of them.

What about WoS members that don't have at least a few released games in WoS archive? Chances are they are not contributing a whole lot to the site anyway. Let's get rid of them also.

There has been too many people interested in the ZX-Spectrum lately. We have to do something about it!

So the only really important parts of WoS are the parts that have been outdated since 2012? Ouch!

I agree. I think the phrase is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. It only takes one 'evil' WoS member to leak stuff anyway. Bad decision I'm afraid.

I had noticed this has happened with some posts before but not with the whole site.

As most of the content and archive is primarily populated by material long predating 2012, yes ;)

  • Yes, but most of it is about whats in my toilet and similar threads!

Well that's the forums, not the site content (I hope)...and that just further supports my point that the forums are not really that important as far as preservation of speccy material goes.

Certainly I would agree with the chat areas being disposable but things like development areas are well worth preservation.

  • Sure, but forums are not needed for preservation projects to continue.
  • I would like to preserve them though!
  • Well the forums are not going away (I assume) so rest easy! ..and log in.

  • The World of Spectrum forums are an absolutely critical part of the Spectrum scene. It is the community. It's where you can ask questions and there's a reasonable chance of getting an answer. Effectively a living knowledge resource. By making it log-in only, you reduce passing traffic. Reducing the chance of someone having a look, coming back for the first time in ages, and contributing in some way. If you reduce WoS to the database, then you reduce it down to a repository (albeit a very large and very good one).

I sorely question why these forums should be compromised for the protection of a product - any product, whether it is rightly or wrongly maligned. These forums must remain independent.

    That's a bit dramatic.

Anyone who views the forums as important as you described wont have a problem logging in. Just as whenever I've needed to sign up to a forum to ask a question or get something that's only accessible via being logged in...I do it.

The world (of spectrum) wont end simply because you are now required to log in.

  • Can some of the Forum categories remain visible if not logged in?
  • AFAIK so far there's not even any information whether current forum visibility is a technical glitch or intended behavior...

  • I'm guessing it's just a glitch or a temporary issue of some sort, as nobody would register to join a forum if they couldn't see any posts on it.
  • Could a moderator clarify what the situation is?

If this is deliberate, it's a completely brain-dead decision.

  • I had not noticed. As with all forums I regularly visit, I'm normally always logged in....
