A Cheeky Question about Amstrad computer

Just out of interest, can you only use the Amstrad 464 with an Amstrad dedicated monitor ? As this site is World Of Amstrad, I thought I would ask !
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

  • Anyhoo, you can make a cable to convert from DIN6 to SCART which will work, also I see that ebay has a few converters to do what you want.
Found this link about the scart cable

Gargoyle wanted to give me a free Amstrad with colour monitor to test play Marsport for them back in the day, but me being me said no, I managed to talk the local computer shop into letting me use theirs instead. I just thought it may be interesting to replay them all on the Amstrad as I have the box set of their games for the Amstrad.

I don't like mouse & rat killer, it gives me a bad tummy and I break out in spots !

Although I may just play Tir Na Nog on my rubber key spectrum as I tried playing a little of it on Spectaculator and found it Bloody irritating, getting lost and killed all the time, no wonder so many people didn't get on with it. I used to be able to play it in my sleep and mostly without my map as I had it mapped in my head.

  • SCART is probably your best bet, you may find some demo effects don't work (or work sub-optimally) as some rely on the exact response rate of the monitor or how it behaves in weird and wonderful scenarios, but for the most part it should be OK.

I always wanted a CPC as a teenager, but having had one or two since I always end up being disappointed with game resolutions apart from the odd exception.

  • The Amstrad NC100. We have two in the loft. School got one for my daughter to type stuff up and spellcheck on as she's dyslexic, then her gran bought her one of her own. The school one was never returned as it was dated by the time she was finished with it.

There was an external RF modulator available for the CPC464, so you could tune in a telly to it in the days when SCART was still a novelty.
  • It's easy to make a CPC to SCART cable, but not all TVs will work unless you put some batteries (or voltage) on it. The CPC output is RGB so you'll get good picture quality. But keep on mind that not all smart TVs will be smart enough to select the correct settings, so you'll maybe need to put +12v on SCART pin 8 and/or +1v on pin 16 to select 4:3 RGB picture.

Also, Amstrad monitor serves as a PSU so you'll need another PSU. A CPC6128 it needs +12v and +5v, you can get both from any PC PSU (I use a picoATX with my +3 and my CPCs).
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!
  • I have a CPC464 and made a cable to attach it to my Amiga monitor. They really are quite brilliant machines and quite definitely my 2nd favourite 8 bit computer.
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...
