That Robot Boxing movie I'm almost certain is based on an 80s Japanese cartoon ?

Hello , as a kid I saw a cartoon where the nerdy kid built a fighting robot and programmed it using his computer. The fighting scenes involved the kid typing furiously at the keyboard to control the robot in a boxing ring. This is almost exactly the plot of that movie with Hugh Jackman anyone else recall this and what it was called ? I can't find it on the internet

  • The Hugh Jackman film was "Real Steel" (2011), based on the short-story "Steel," (1956).
Not sure about the cartoon, although the whole humongous mecha genre is very popular in Japan; so I wouldn't be surprised if similar plots appeared.

Perhaps if you have a look at the Anime/Magna section here: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HumongousMecha it might jog your memory.

  • The mecha wasn't huge I remember but it emphasized boxing and the kids being nerds and coding. The main character was a bit of a nerd that built the robot in his parents shed
  • The real fighting machine was ripped to bits and the boy found an abandoned obsolete model and repaired it, if I remember correctly.

  • Sorry, I forgot that bit, I think it was called Real Steel Atom, or something like that.
