System3

Last week, with the other complaints, there was one that needed further investigation as it appeared to be from Mark Cale regarding system3 titles. I have removed these titles on his request (via a DMCA notice rather than direct contact).

Indeed, this has hardly caused a ripple compared to the tsunami when Activision was removed. I remember it well.

  • Sorry, what was the point in the pettiness of these companies denying the distribution of their 30-year-old titles, again? I must have missed the memo explaining how financially devastating it was to them. I mean, won’t somebody think of the children!

  • Isn't there some time limit on copyright? I thought it was 25 years not that legal chicanery won't be used to renew copyright in a number of ways but is it worth it? Don't they have the sense to see that trying to squeeze the goose that laid the golden egg might prevent it from doing so again. In other words is the chance of earning a few more bucks from the retro market worth the very real risk of killing off what might - given encouragement - cause a whole new bonanza

To be quite honest a denial of distribution means very little in reality. You may not be able to download the titles from WoS but there certainly other sites on the internet where you can find them.

  • What is the purpose of WoS, if so many important games can not be found in the archive and if we have to go to other places to find them?

    btw, is this true?

I think WOS was ok with copyright until Mr Fogerty started selling WOS archive DVD's for £30 a pop.

The permissions granted were for non profit use. The latest debacle was from complaints from Atari, Nintendo, Taito and Ubisoft. Probably from the sale of their titles on a WOS DVD.

I doubt it has anything to do with the RCL issue. Which the courts have decided over already.

I loved WOS with a passion. It's been in a decline since Martijn left to live his life.

People, are you living in a cave or under a rock?

It's nothing about earning money from these old games. Rather it's some kind of revenge. Lee engaged into this stinking Vega affair and made quite a lot of enemies. Now they are striking back at Lee and at WOS which they consider (mostly correctly) to be his personal site.

Not true about the DVD, I've apologized to Lee, and have tried to remove the post, but it's been locked. I emailed the webmaster on the Next forums to have it removed.

I was lied too by Mr Bum. Who said it in the comments of his last video. I stupidly believed him.

No. There absolutely no truth in the comment whatsoever. FrankT has apologised and accepted that his post was entirely incorrect.
Lee has never sold DVD's of the WoS archive and never suggested doing so. The whole accusation stems from a post approx 15 years ago where someone was asking the value of the WoS archive and suggested putting it on a CD. Lee said the archive was so large it would have to be a DVD which at the time was quite expensive.

So it was a conversation taken completely out of context with no element of truth behind it whatsoever.

System 3 are still in existence and are planning new games based on their old IP.

That would make perfect sense regarding their denial of distribution. And goes without saying that WoS complies with their request and has our full support of any new games based on their old 8 bit titles.

  • So how many others sites have reported that they received the same notice?

And godspeed to them, but do they still distribute the Spectrum versions of their games?

I'd like to know this too.

If they're selling the Spectrum .TAP files, or physical cassettes then fine, I'd probably buy some of them.

If however, they don't want anyone playing the Spectrum versions because they want to make a few hundred quid from an Android version, then the Spectrum scene should judge accordingly...

But my guess is that some of the stuff Ralf mentioned above is in the mix too.

The World Of Spectrum website is, and should continue to be, simply a database with information concerning everything* about our dearly beloved Speccy and other Sinclair related info. Whether it be games, books, authors, etc.

The Wide Webs are vast, you can go find the game files elsewhere, now or eventually
    .
    *Whenever possible :-D

    What now?
  • Sure, but I prefer working database, something like this:
    http://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/

    So, what else is left?
Outdated emulators section, abandoned Top 100 list maybe?
I do not think so ..
If I want to download one of my favorite emulators, like Spud, I have to go somewhere else, because the latest version on wos is from 2011 ??
For best games list, of course, spectrum20.org is much more relevant, etc...
Therefore, I rarely visiting a website, only forum remains, as the second largest meeting place for Spectrum fans, but wos must and should be much more than that..

  • Second largest?

There are approximately 10 times more active users, every day...
  • Ah. So WoS is the largest Speccy place I can actually understand.

Without reading it (my Russian is a bit rusty) I suspect 95% of the chat involves the Russian clones rather the original UK Spectrum itself.

Oh, I remember I stopped visiting that other site because of the anti adblocker banners. They became so annoying that I decided to skip it instead of writing a blocker to block it.

  • zx.pk.ru is a good site but yes, it's made by Russians for Russians.

So you'll find a lot of info there about Russian clones, about old pirate cassette compilations, about Tr-Dos, about Russian demoscene, Russian people and so on. Oh, and they don't give a damn about Vega ;)

It's not a replacement for WOS and WOS is not replacement for zx.pk.ru.
