WORMS on the speccy

seems to have been a few genuine efforts to make Worms for the spec back in the late 90s... obviously it would never have been released as it was too late by then. Ive just been trying out the various demo versions

this one is the most basic effort and plays way too fast when you fire weapons

this one is the most playable and seems to have had the most work done on it. you can get a weapons menu up but whatever you select just looks like basic bazooka when you fire it.

this one looks the most finished (visually) but you cant fire anything, although the power bar moves. the sea effect is good.

then theres this:

no download, but kind of suggests that its the final version?

so are these all just fan-made things done for a bit of fun. must have been some serious effort gone into the 2nd and 3rd ones above...

thanks. downloaded the link in the first post and looking now. another interesting demo. i assume its not playable and you can only scroll around the level?
  • Yes, seems there wasn't big progress.
    Heavy on the disasm
  • Ahhh, Worms.

A marvellous game, especially if you have a friend to play with at the same computer. I had this luck, spent probably dozens of hours playing it with my mate on PC. We were no kids anymore, actually in early 20s when it came out but it was totally addictive.

A Spectrum version is possible but it would be a big, ambitious project. I'm not surprised that all teams that worked on it gave up. They made scenery, they made walking worms but gave up on physics and weapons and it would be the hardest part.

There was gravity, there was wind, each weapon acted differently, destroyed ground differently, worms and grenades bounced off terrain, there were parts with different gravity like moon scenery etc.

Still hats off to everybody who tried to code it for Speccy. You were young, brave and ambitious guys :)
  • A version of Worms for the Spectrum Next would be cool.

Worms Armageddon was easily the most played game by everyone in my uni hall of residence (or maybe tied with Goldeneye but I never enjoyed that).

great fun multiplayer and a yeah bit too ambitious for the spec I guess...
