Poll: Soft Aid compilation

This month 32 years ago, Soft Aid was released for a good cause. It included a bunch of interesting games from the early years.

Vote for your fave game of the lot. Only one. A difficult choice, I presume.

Even though Sorcery, 3D Tank Duel or The Pyramid are games I love, and Ant Attack is a true classic, my vote goes to Kokotoni Wilf, a great adventure I played a lot.

  • It was a choice between Kokotoni Wilf and Ant Attack. Although Ant Attack's good, the controls kill it, there's just too many keys!
The rest of the games are a bit naff.

  • I voted Kokotoni Wilf because almost everything else barely resembles a game, with the exception of Ant Attack which is another "Oh wow it was great at the time" game, the rest are pure shite though. Not the best selection to raise money for starving children, the stand alone games probably raised so little money the programmers were probably also starving....In a first world problems kind of way...

You've just spoiled my argument about it's a 'bunch of interesting games' :))
  • I went for Gilligan's Gold, because I think after all of these years at retains the most playability. I played 3D Tank Duel, Ant Attack, Kokotoni and Sorcery more though. Weird I know. I completed Sorcery from that compilation.

I though the games were mostly good / decent - with the exceptions of The Pyramid, Starbike and Jack and the beanstalk. Kokotoni was okay but it annoyed me after a while.

Oh, and great idea for a poll!
  • Quite a tough choice, I had to just ask myself "you have to immediately play one of these games now, which would you choose?", and went for Ant Attack.
  • I've only played 2 - Ant Attack and Kokotoni Wilf, which was a bit crap so went for Ant Attack.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • Ant Attack on Speccy for me too.
Sorcery is better as Sorcery+ on CPC, and likewise the C64 version of Gilligan's Gold is better too.
  • It was between The Pyramid and Ant Attack for me but I chose Ant Attack in the end. That Jack And The Beanstalk has received votes is proof that you shouldn't take part in these polls while under the influence of alcohol.
  • Ant Attack! Though Gilligan's Gold was a very enjoyable game, too.
  • I was going to ask why there was no love given to Spellbound but then I realized it was the wrong one. Anyways, went for Kokotoni Wilf.
    What now?
  • Tricky one this. Ant Attack is the obvious one to choose, but I have fond memories of most of these games. I'd forgotten that this cassette is the reason I knew these games so well.

My heart says The Pyramid, my head says AntAttack or Kokotoni Wilf. Mind you Sorcery and Gilligan's Gold were good too, if bloody difficult.

I can't decide, so I'm voting Jack and the Beanstalk.

  • The best compilation tape in the world. Worth getting even though we already owned two of the games. Amazing. I voted StarBike, but really I know deep down that Kokotoni Wilf wins hands-down. The compilation on the whole is the best thing in Speccydom. :)
  • Who voted for Jack and the Beanstalk? :-w

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr ... Two comments above yours. Oh, and whoever else.
Anyways, yes, we can start with hanging R-TypeR-Tape ( :D )

  • I'm quite surprised that Gilligan's Gold hasn't got more votes,

I only played it a few times but to this day I can still hum the theme tune...

I wouldn't expect anything less from somebody who's favourite PS2 game is The Suffering...

Sorry it's been years now I know, but I'm not gonna stop :p

I had the SoftAid compilation as a kid and enjoyed most of the games. That said, I've voted for Gilligan's Gold because I'm pretty sure that was the one that drew me back in the most and for which I have the most lasting memories.

Jack and the Beanstalk and Starbike were both terrible and would compete for the title of worst game, except that I have literally no memory of Spellbound ever being included at all, which suggests it was spectacularly unimpressive to me at the time.

  • Lots of love for Gilligan's Gold I've noticed, I don't really like that game at all, it's a clunky mess, and a rather poor rip-off of Bagman. It's one of those ones I tried to like but just didn't.

  • Gilligan's Gold was the one that I kept loading and playing. Ant Attack was loaded a few times (I preferred Zombie Zombie) just to get the idea of the game. Pyramid was played a few times.
Kokotoni Wolf was a pile of poo, Jack and the beanstalk was reset after loading for being a bigger pile of poo with added flies. The others I don't remember being on the tape.

My vote goes to Gilligan's Gold.
  • Did anyone actually get off the first level of Gilligan's Gold?

It's potentially good but just too bloody hard.

To be fair, that applies to 90% of spectrum games!

Yes, I did. I'm sure it changes colour as you advance. Doubt I could do it these days though.
  • I went with Kokotoni Wolf. However I spent most time with tank duel. My 'friend' swore to me that it was possible to drive to the volcano on the distant horizon, it just took a while to get there. Lying toad.

Yeah it is possible. Keep trying! ;)

2 votes for Jack and the Beanstalk and no votes for Sorcery. Life is unfair.

  • Went with Ant Attack as it's one of the few good games on there. That said, I gave this compilation a fair go.

I had some fun with Gilligan's Gold but was terrible at it. It's a coin op conversion, the arcade version is called Bagman. It's equally tough.

Kokotoni Wilf... something was just off about it.
  • Although Ant Attack was the only classic game on the compilation I never really enjoyed playing it as it was way too hard. Gilligan's Gold was surprisingly decent but The Pyramid was easily the game I put the most time into, so voted for that.
  • I've gone for The Pyramid. It's a nice, little arcade game and quite addictive, if a bit frustrating.

Of the others I think I've only played Horace (which I almost picked) and Sorcery (which looks nice and should be good, but isn't very playable).

  • I purchased this 'back then' , it was the first time I'd seen (or heard of!) Kokotoni Wilf and a few others such as Starbike, Gillians Gold and Spellbound. The other games I think I was vaguely aware of but not seen them as such.

I had seen Pyramid previously and quite liked it. I voted for Koko in the end although it was a reasonably close run between that, Pyramid and Ant Attack.
