Blue or Jade Playstation 1

edited November 2017 in Chit chat
I've been thinking a lot about the sony Play-Station recently. I know there were Blue and Jade 'developer' Play-Stations. There was also a Black on for hobbyist developers. Does anyone own one?

  • I know somebody by proxy who bashed a net Yaroze to bits with a pickaxe....If I ever meet him face to face I may actually punch him....

Strangely enough that's not much of a price bump considering how much they were originally.

I'd have thought they'd be closer to 4 or 5 grand by now.

Although as a dev machine I'm sure they're pretty useless if the dev side relied heavily on net connectivity, unless there's some devoted nutters like the Phantasy Star Online types who have private servers just for Net yaroze stuff.....Highly unlikely, but not impossible really.

I'd have been really interested if Sony had've released a similar project for PS2, might have got me interested in actual programming again.

The PS4 is a pretty amazing piece of kit, and after owning one for 7 years I've finally decided the PS3 is a worthy successor to the PS2, but for me the PS2 is probably still the best Playstation games wise. If you disregard some of the abysmal 3rd party shovelware shite, there's still thousands of amazing games that many, many people may still never ever play.

Yes the graphics look a bit crusty now compared to the modern beasts, but still like we say so often on this forum, graphics are trumped by playability in most cases...

Blitter boy? I think it was demo 83 the black and yellow disc....I have 2 of those discs, but I have no idea where the second one came from? I used to use a copy of it for my swap disc for burners :))

Now with ePSXe even burners are defunct that emulator knows how to be a playstation, better than a Playstation does :))

...you're left with about 10 decent games!
No idea how it became the best selling console of all time.

Probably because there were more than 10 good titles for it :p

It's not the Amiga we're talking about here you know :))

Shame I can't say the same for most of Nintendo's efforts either, I've been really disappointed with them for the last 10-15 years. Makes me sad because I want to like their stuff I really do, but I just feel meh....

  • Horse for courses I guess. I just never rated it.
The Amiga on the other hand...

I think I only properly played about 10 titles on my PS2. Probably seven or eight of them were the Pro Evolution series, GTA3 and Vice City :-)

  • If I play PS1 games on a PS2, or maybe PS3. Do they run better or is the emulation faithful as well as GPU performance goes?

  • I've tried a few PS1 games on PS3. They all ran perfectly but, good lord, the graphics were so blocky!

It smoothes out the textures a bit on PS2...dunno about PS3? Makes a lot of games look a lot better but can also ruin some..for instance, it tries to fix the fog in Silent Hill which makes it look really crappy! :D

You can make games load a bit faster too, but as it does this by speeding the disc up, it sometimes makes music that streams from the CD go a bit fast!

But aye, it does improve quite a few games by playing them on PS2!

There are definitely way more than 10 good PS1 games, by the way...and for even more, get yourself a chipped PS1 or emulate to play all the groovy American and Japanese games we didn't get! ;)

I've got a load on cover discs too..including Blitter Boy, which is great fun! Probably the best Yaroze game! :)

Yes, Official PlayStation Magazine featured quite a few Net Yaroze games.
  • I've never bothered with new consoles. My last one was the original XBox and that was because my then employer gave me vouchers for christmas and I could not think to get.

I have so many good unfinished games I see no point in buying new ones. There are loads of good games on the playstation. The tomb raider original was ace, Wipeout is my favorite, rayman is not too bad but hard. For me its the one platform where the launch titles where as good as the later titles.
